Bandera “One on One”: Marvin Agustin

KAHAPON ay umalis si Marvin Agustin patungong Belgium para umupo as jury for the 37th Brussels International Independent Film Festival na magsisimula naman bukas.
The GMA Artist Center prime actor is the second Filipino to sit in the jury list of the annual international film festival after Joel Lamangan and the first Filipino actor naman. Bago tumungong Belgium, hinabol namin si Marvin for a one-on-one last week dahil isa siya sa hindi na-interview ng mga press noong launch ng kaniyang bagong Tele Babad na Beauty Queen. Sobrang hectic ng schedule ni Marvin dahil bukod sa pagiging actor, he is also becoming a force in the restaurant world.
Now with 10 restaurants and opening more soon, sa mga restaurant niya na lang ginagawa ang mga meeting niya or interview at depende pa sa araw. Sa first set up, dapat sana’y sa Marciano’s sa Greenbelt kami magkikita pero umulan. Sa next set up, sa Mr. Kurosawa na sa Eastwood.

BANDERA: Teka lang, for the record, ilan na ba ang restaurants mo, saan-saan at anu-ano ang theme?
MARVIN AGUSTIN: We have Oyster Boy, ang una naming restaurant, sa Araneta Coliseum na Ilonggo ang food; Marciano’s sa Greenbelt 3 na Italian, Mr. Kurosawa, a Euro-Japanese fusion here sa Eastwood at isa sa NPC sa Resort World, another one sa Resort World na Jimmy Chow na Chinese-Asian, Sumo Sam which has four branches in EDSA Shangri-La, Rockwell Power Plant, Ayala and TriNoMa and John and Yoko, a cosmopolitan Japanese cuisine sa Greenbelt 5. That’s ten.

B: I noticed award-winning at highly recommended ang mga restaurants mo (Mr. Kurosawa has Philippines’ Best and Appetite Magazine Recommended decal sa pinto). Do you have a Marvin Agustin corporation na?
MA: It’s Sumo Sam Food Corporation. Kasama ko rito ang best friend kong si Ricky Landico and Raymond Madalyo (owner ng Red Crab among others). Florabel Co (owner ng Florabel) and Dennis Gan are also part owners of some of our restaurants.

B: Why restaurant business?
MA: Kasi nagsimula akong waiter sa Tia Maria at 16. Ginawa ko lahat doon, waiter, janitor, security. Hindi naman ako galing sa pamilya ng artista kaya ang mga idol ko noon ‘yung mga manager ng Tia Maria. Sabi ko ang gagaling nila, gusto kong maging manager din. From there, talagang nangarap na akong magkaroon din ng restaurant. Tapos nag-aral na rin ako sa International School of Culinary Arts and Hotel Management para i-professionalize ko na ang hobby ko.

B: Very expensive and successful hobby. Will this stop? I mean when will you stop opening more restaurants?
MA: Can you stop a hobby?

B: What about your acting career?
MA: Acting is still my passion. Kapag may work ako, cancelled lahat ang meeting ko o kung may papipirmahan or urgent meeting, pinapunta ko na lang sa set ko. Alam mo, hindi naman ako nangarap maging artista noon. It was just a need for me to act kasi kailangan. But after more than fourteen years in the industry, it became a passion na.

B: Pero sa bilis ng paglaki ng restaurant business mo, para namang nawala ka sa circulation. You used to be GMA’s fair-haired boy na kaliwa’t kanan ang trabaho.
MA: Hindi naman ako nawawala. May Beauty Queen ako (sa GMA TeleBabad). Next week ako papasok. Tapos may dalawa akong movies na parehong ilalabas sa December, ang “Ikaw Ang Pagibig” with Jomari Yllana and Ina Feleo in time for the 300th year ng Penafrancia at ang “Tanging Ina” for MMFF. Kumbaga, kung hindi man ako nakita, kasi may hinahanda ako.

B: Naalala ko, sa sobrang kaliwa’t kanang projects mo noon, pati si Ms. Annabelle Rama napag-comment noon dahil nagkasunod-sunod naman ang trabaho n’yo ni JC de Vera.
MA: Yung kay Tita Annabelle, I don’t take it personally naman. I’m sure hindi naman personal ang galit niya sa akin and I respect her. Ganito lang ‘yun eh, parang ako businessman, siya manager. Gusto niyang palakasin ang mga alaga niya, ako naman gusto kong palakasin ang business ko. Naiintindihan ko naman ’yun.

B: Let’s talk about Brussels International Film Festival.
MA: Alam mo noong una, ayoko talagang pag-usapan ito. Nahihiya ako. Wala pa kasing formal offer. Napanood pala nila ‘yung “Sigwa” tapos napanood din nila yung Red Shoes. Nagulat sila, magkakaiba ang roles ko so sabi nila, can we ask you to sit in this year’s jury. Ang una kong tinanong, si Direk Joel. Sabi ko, ‘Direk, ano gagawin ko doon?’ Sabi ni Direk, ‘Artista ka, ito ang nakita nila sa iyo so ito ang dadalhin mong expertise doon’. Ganoon pala ang jury, may artista, may director, may technical. Tapos. dumating na ‘yung formal invitation natuwa na ako sabi ko, Lord ang dami namang blessings nito, salamat po.

B: Sa showbiz side naman, hanggang acting lang ba ang gusto mo? Kung ilang projects na ang dapat na ikaw ang magpu-produce pero hindi natutuloy. I remember ikaw dapat ang actor and co producer ng “Donsol”. Also this “Red Shoe”.
MA: Businessman pa rin kasi ako. Give me a good project. If I read it and I see numbers in it, I will produce it tomorrow. Wala pa lang tamang project.

B: O baka wala na ang hunger mo.
MA: Nandito pa rin. Ang dami ko pa ring gustong gawin. Gusto kong mag-comedy sa TV, gusto kong mag-host. Hindi naman binibigay. At the end of the day, naiisip ko na lang, sila pa rin naman kasi ang masusunod and I will just follow as an employee.

B: Kamusta naman ang lovelife? Parang ito ang nanamihik.
MA: I’m dating. I’m happy.
