Saan kinukuha ni Rica Peralejo ang bonggang confidence? 'It was age'

Rica Peralejo

“Someone asked me recently, ‘Where do you get this confidence?’ Perhaps to her it is new. And a far cry from who I was four years ago.

“I had to stop and think, really. Cause I think it’s a mix of things. It’s…a journey, actually, to get here. But I think it began on the day I realised I wasn’t wrong,” simulang pagbabahagi ni Rica.

Pagpapatuloy niya, “That all those years I felt wronged were years I felt right. And when I began following my nose again I discovered more and more of the many things I am able to get right but was made to believe otherwise. I was coming up from the rubbles of self-doubt.

“It is a powerful thing to know you know what is right from wrong. And anyone who makes you mistrust that ability in you should be avoided at all costs and anyone who draws that out of you or celebrates that in you must be kept forever.

“Because becoming your very own enemy is a strategy — and a great one at that. Once you become unthinking and unfeeling, you are now the perfect tool. Think of a knife. It has no morality, logic, conscience.

“But when wielded it can kill. This strategy is effective because to be a tool looks pretty productive. And this world loves producing. Hurrying. Accomplishing,” paglalahad pa niya.

Pero tanong ni Rica, “But why would God give us a heart? A mind? The spirit? Why would He make us in His image and likeness if we were meant to be just knives? As my seminary prof once, “Efficiency is not the point of love.” And yet God is love.

“Oh also I said to her it was age. Heck at 43 I care less about others and do more now for myself. Your organs and joints will force you to do so — this is the way of life. You increasingly have to mind yourself,” pagbabahagi pa niya.

Dagdag pa ni Rica, “Also four decades of knowing how stupid you can get is helpful. To almost die many times in many dumb ways but didn’t. To be so violated but also still spared does something to your brain, yes?

“It makes you really think that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. So my only advice for you is to try living long enough to see that day.

“PS: I still waver every now&then. Habits are habits and I self-doubt plenty times till today.

“But you know what helps? Exercising strength & agency where you can, & whenever i can,” ang buong pahayag ni Rica Peralejo.
