Gary nag-concert sa US kahit may pneumonia, kinailangang sabayan na ng back-up singers: ‘Kasi hindi ko na abot yung mga kanta’

NAKAKA-TOUCH ang kuwento ng celebrity couple na sina Gary Valenciano at Angeli Pangilinan tungkol sa series of concert ng nag-iisang Mr. Pure Energy sa US at Canada.
Knows n’yo ba na nagkaiyakan pala sa concert tour ni Gary V sa North America dahil sa mga madamdaming kaganapan habang nagpe-perform siya sa iba’t ibang lugar doon?
Pagkatapos ng super successful concert niyang “Gary V Back At The Museum The Repeat” last Friday, October 20, sa Music Museum, Greenhills, San Juan City, ay nakachikahan namin sandali ang OPM icon.
Dito nga naitanong sa kanya ang tungkol sa mga touching moments na na-experience niya sa kanyang concert tour abroad titled “Gary V Reenergized 2023 Live!”
“Kami, kami, nag-iyakan talaga. And the audience. Kasi I remember like in Toronto, second song pa lang, standing ovation. Sabi ko, ‘Ngayon lang ako nagkaroon ng standing ovation na mabilis yung kanta.’ Usually pag mabagal, they stand up.

“Eto, second number pa lang, bang! Tumayo na sila. So I said talaga, ‘This is just the second number, don’t get me too emotional!’
“But I get also, especially in Canada, I was supposed to be there in 2020. May down payment na at lahat. And then the pandemic came, di ba?” pagbabahagi ni Gary.
Patuloy pa niya, “And then 2021, ganu’n pa rin, I couldn’t get there and all. In Canada, it was obvious na sabik na sabik ang mga tao. Some of them were ticket holders from 2020.
“They honored the tickets, so it was really, really ano. Then you know, when I was in the States, my first concert, I had pneumonia. Without even knowing that I had it,” aniya pa.

Kasunod nito, nakaramdam ng kakaiba sa kanyang katawan ang singer, “I just felt there’s something wrong. And then the doctor gave me steroids. And then, so I gained a little weight pa when I was in the States and all.
“But it was only after the first concert that I went for a CT scan and that’s when they told me, ‘You have pneumonia.’
“So then the talk came in na itutuloy pa ba natin yung tour na ‘to? Because if we don’t push through with this tour, do we push through with the repeats in Manila?But then thank God na, you know, I was a lot stronger a week after. And I was able to finish every concert.
“And every concert was finished not by the skin of my teeth, ha? I mean, it was finished na, like tonight. ‘Bang! Okay! When’s the next one?!’ I’m just enjoying the crest of the wave while this body can still do it,” ang excited pang chika ni Gary V.
Ayon naman kay Angeli, talagang nag-perform pa rin ang kanyang husband sa tatlong shows nito para sa “Gary V Reenergized 2023 Live!” kahit may sakit siya.
“I’m not kidding! September, the night before, ubo siya nang ubo. As in! s
Sabi ko, ‘Anong gagawin ko dito?’ Nu’ng Thursday, the night before we flew.
“So I called our pulmonologist sa Texas. Sabi ko, ‘Dr. Baron, he has no voice and he’s coughing! Ganyan-ganyan.’ Steroids! He took steroids. And then, in three days, he had a voice. As in iyakan yung mga band.
“Kasi, hindi siya makapag-rehearse. Nagdalawang rehearsal, hindi siya makakanta,” aniya pa.
Pagpapatuloy ni Angeli, “Ako nga, nagka-COVID. Kunyari, Saturday, ano siya, ubo pa rin nang ubo. Sabi ko, ‘Baka naman COVID yan?’ Hindi. Negative.
“Monday, nag-COVID si Gina. Tuesday, nag-COVID ako. Buti si Gary, hindi. Ang lakas! And then Thursday, confirmed, pneumonia. So he performed with pneumonia. Buti na lang, non-infectious. E, kung infectious yon, hindi puwede.

“E, sold out na yung show sa Pechanga, sabi ko nga, ‘Will we cancel? Will we cancel?’ You know, pero sabi niya, ‘No, I wanna do it.’
“Alam na ng audience sa California. Pero hindi pa namin alam nu’ng sa Suquamish. Pero sinabi niya, ‘I’ve been sick.’ Yung mga fans, umiiyak. Pero he sang, ha, two hours,” dagdag pa ng talent manager.
Inamin naman daw ni Gary sa concert niya sa Suquamish na may problema sa kanyang boses, “It was so bad that the back-up singers had to sing along with me na. Kasi, hindi ko na abot, e. Hindi ko na abot yung mga kanta.

“Tapos lumabas pa si Gabriel (anak niya) we had to do all our numbers and all. But I was already under medication then. And then, that was in Suquamish. Then we travelled about like an hour to Seattle where I had some days off. And that’s when the doctor said, ‘Go out and have a CT scan just to make sure.’ Yun.
“And while I was in the hospital, I didn’t go to a clinic, I went to the hospital, ER talaga, to have it done, but I couldn’t go with Angeli or Gina because they had COVID.
“So I was in the room, going… ‘Hon, I’m going na, ha? I have your food here,’ ganyan-ganyan-ganyan. We were in a suite pero separate rooms na ganun. And then I drank a lot of water and all.
“Saturday and Sunday was the concert in California and then in Portland. I felt a lot stronger na. But my voice was not yet at its peak. After that I had a 12-day break in Orlando with my family. That’s when I built up my strength again.
“And when I went back to Calgary, Winnipeg, and Toronto, yun na! I felt yeah, it’s good! ‘Ano, Gary, can you do the repeats in Manila for…?’ ‘Yeah! Game! Let’s do it!’ So here we are,” ang pagbabahagi pa ni Gary V sa pinagdaanang challenges sa pagko-concert sa ibang bansa.
