MMFF 2022 Review: Jake, Dimples, Sean ibinigay ang puso’t kaluluwa sa ‘My Father, Myself’

IT is not surprising to us na pinalakpakan sina Jake Cuenca, Dimples Romana at maging si Sean de Guzman sa premiere night ng “My Father, Myself”.
Ubod kasi sila ng husay sa kanilang pagganap, si Jake bilang closeted gay human rights lawyer, si Dimples bilang asawa niya who is silently suffering from his shenanigans at si Sean bilang anak ng love ni Jake na si Allan Paule na na-in love sa kanya.
Even newcomer Tiffany Grey was good as the daughter of Jake and Dimples who fell madly in love with her stepbrother Sean.
Easily, Jake is the most challenged in his character as it necessitated nuances only an actor like him is gifted with.
His predicament lies in keeping his secret at bay, na bading siya, all because he wanted to be respected by his family and by his community.
Jake showed utmost sensitivity as an actor even when the camera is not fully panning on him. The camera caught a glint of happiness in his eyes when he learned that Sean was on top of his class and eventually on top of the bar exam.

He was fidgety nang malaman niyang may pagtingin sa kanya si Sean. In the cemetery scene, he was able to draw the difference between wanting to reciprocate Sean’s love and wanting to preserve his dignity.
In all of his scenes, Jake not only gave his all, he gave his soul!!!
Dimples, undeniably gave another fine performance that she merited a great applause from the audience during her confrontation scene with Jake.
The cracking of her voice and the betrayed feeling in her eyes all conjure an acting spectacle that sadly cannot be found in other actresses. She was genuinely good.
Sean, caught in the torn-between-two-lovers dilemma also showed some sensitivity in his acting. New that he is in the business, he was able to play his character with ease and conviction.
His confusion over the goings-on in his life is written all over his cute face.
A relatively new actress, Tiffany, gave a sterling performance as a spoiled brat daughter of Jake and Dimples.
Her battle against winning Sean’s heart and doing everything to make him feel the same way are what makes her character interesting. Her cemetery scene where she confronted Sean using vulgar language easily gave the audience goosebumps. She nailed it!!!
The movie, under the stewardship of acclaimed director Joel Lamangan, gave the viewing public a ringside view of how a family struggled in dealing with a problem which emanated from the padre de familia’s long-kept-at-bay secret – that he’s a closeted homosexual.
Lamangan, award-winning that he is, helmed the project with utmost sensitivity, winning along the way, the heart of those Filipinos who never knew what the box contains, in a manner of speaking, and how to deal with a family problem like that.
Lamangan, no doubt, is in full control of his masterpiece, his virtuosity evident in the way he handled his material.
We will not be surprised if Lamangan clinches the best director trophy, if Jake is crowned best actor, if Dimples gets the best actress nod, if Sean wins the best supporting or best actor trophy, if Tiffany wins the best actress award and if the movie is hailed Best Picture in the Metro Manila Film Festival.
