PBA Coach of the Year si Austria

Sa ikaapat na pagkakataon sa loob ng huling limang taon ay napili si Leovino “Leo” Austria ng San Miguel Beer bilang Coach of the Year ng PBA Press Corps.

Napunta sa 62-taong-gulang na si Austria ang Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan trophy matapos na maihatid niya ang Beermen sa dalawang kampeonato sa nagdaang PBA season — ang Philippine Cup na kanyang ikalimang sunod at ang Commissioner’s Cup.

Muntik nang makabuo muli ng Grand Slam ang San Miguel ngunit nabigo itong makapasok sa Finals ng Governors Cup, ang huling torneyo ng season.

Tinalo ni Austria sa taunang parangal si coach Tim Cone ng Barangay Ginebra na nagkampeon naman sa Governors Cup.

Nakatakda sanang ganapin ang annual PBA Press Corps Awards ceremony sa Marso 16 sa Novotel, Cubao, Quezon City ngunit ipinagpaliban muna ito ng mga mamamahayag na kumukober sa PBA bunga ng COVID-19 pandemic.

Sa kabuuan, ang dating 1985 PBA Rookie of the Year na si Austria ay may walong kampeonato na sa liga bilang head coach.

Kinilala siya ng tatlong sunod bilang Coach of the Year mula 2015 hanggang 2017 pero noong isang taon ay nakuha ni Magnolia coach Chito Victolero ang karangalan.

Ang tanging coach na may mas maraming Coach of the Year award kaysa kay Austria at si Chot Reyes na may lima. Sina Tim Cone at Ryan Gregorio naman ay may tigatlo.
