‘Sa ilang dekada ni Maricel sa showbiz never niyang naisip mag-retire’

FILM producers who get the slimmest of chances na mapasama sa Metro Manila Film Festival ang kanilang mga pelikula find solace in other playdates most especially in November-slated ones.

Like farmers, nasilat na nga naman kasi ang kanilang pagkakataon to see their crops ready to harvest nang sa ganoo’y magawa na nila itong pera to recoup their capital expenses.

Ilan din sa mga bigong mapasama sa MMFF contend with post-holiday playdates usually the first commercial week when moviegoers have nothing left of their budget. Sa panahong butas na ang bulsa, so to speak.

Between November and January, the former is more preferred by film producers to see their movies shown. Malamang sa hindi kasi ay dito pa lang magsisimula ang early shopping binge to avoid the 11th hour rush na nakasanayan na ng marami nating kababayan.

Tulad ng alam ng lahat, and much to the consternation of the Maricel Soriano fans, ay ligwak ang tinatampukan niyang “The Heiress” sa Magic 8. For all we know, if the strict genre criterion wasn’t to be considered ay malamang na ikawalo o ikasiyam pa ang ranking nito alongside Nora Aunor’s “Isa Pang Bahaghari.”

“The Heiress” now has a last week playdate this month, halos isang buwang napaaga. Its MMFF showing kung saka-sakali will have been reminiscent of the festival the movie audience has grown accustomed to, parang pinahabang one “Shake, Rattle & Roll” part yet with one full creepy experience.

‘Yun nga lang, it’s not the typical Maricel Soriano film her fans are more delighted to see. Hindi naman siya si Kris Aquino.

Pero sa estado ni Maricel ngayon, she can slip into any genre, essay any meaty role or even refuse to do films she may not feel like doing as if it were her obligation never to miss out on every chance.

Off camera, Maricel is actually the heiress to the queenly throne ng mga mabibigat, maniningning at makasaysayang mas beterano pang aktres kesa sa kanya.

Si Inang Marya kung tawagin ng kanyang mga katrabahong kumportable na sa kanya ang siyang tagapagmana ng mga leksiyong dapat matutunan ng mga sumunod na henerasyon. She as an heiress is bound to breed the next heiress, on to the next.

Why doesn’t Maricel seem burned out sa kanyang ginagawa?

Para sa amin, “royal titles” given to celebrities should go with the present.

Lalo na sa TV, laging kadikit ang titulong ito bago siya ipakilala, say, for a number or an interview by the host on cue. In print, one way to avoid repeatedly mentioning the celebrity’s name ay ginagamitan ng bansag sa kanya that often comes with an adjective.

Maiintindihan namin if Imelda Papin or Claire dela Fuente or Eva Eugenio has been stripped of the tag “Jukebox Queen.” Wala na kasing jukebox to drop one’s coins to play his favorite song on 45. Same with their male counterparts.

Dapat ganoon din sa TV. Okey lang tawaging Primetime King si Coco Martin as he has been holding this title for five straight years dahil sa ‘di matinag-tinag niyang primetime teleserye on ABS-CBN.

Eh, ‘yung iba na may nondescript slot on TV? May titulo nga wrapped around their neck, pero wala sa block, ano ‘yon?
