Jay Sonza binakbakan sina Igan, Karen at Kara dahil sa matinding inggit
WE were wondering the least kung bakit of all the mamamahayag na tinawag ni Jay Sonza ng “bastos, walang modo at walang breeding” ay tanging si Ed Lingao (ng TV5) lang ang sumagot sa kanyang Facebook page. The rest—as of this writing ay deadpan lang.
Sa magkaibang panahon namin indirectly nakasama sa trabaho si Ed: sa Manila Chronicle during the late 80s at sa TV5 (nasa Radyo Singko naman kami). Ed was with the editorial department of the Manila Chronicle (who later joined ABS-CBN) only to bump into him in 2016 sa ibang network na.
A journalism graduate from UST, marami sa kanyang mga noo’y bagitong reporters sa print have become this writer’s friends, too. But hardly was there any chance na magkaroon kami even an informal introduction to one another.
Last year noong maging “network buzz” si Ed if only for his rift with Erwin Tulfo, na dati ring magkasama sa ABS-CBN. As far as we know, their dissenting political opinions had something to do with their—in fairness—gentlemanly fight na umabot hanggang social media.
Now back to Jay Sonza. Kung sinagot man ni Ed ang beteranong broadcaster (who’s in between jobs) ay hindi na ‘yon kataka-taka. The fact that Ed had brushes with Erwin na kasama niya sa trabaho, it only means that asserting his rights—as far as he’s concerned—ay walang sinisino kesehodang nasa iisang bubong lang sila.
While Ed is the type who won’t take Jay’s brickbats sitting down ay tahimik lang ang mga tulad nina Arnold Clavio at Kara David ng GMA, Alvin Elchico and Karen Davila ng ABS-CBN at Lourd de Veyra ng TV5.
We cannot answer for Alvin, pero sa palagay nami’y respeto na lang para sa isang beteranong kabaro ang nanaig sa mga “non-patola,” not that we’re saying that Ed lacks respect for Jay.
To begin with, ang naunang hindi nagpakita ng respeto ay si Jay. There’s such a thing as ethics in journalism—even in other profession—na dapat ay aware si Jay considering inugat at tumanda na siya sa larangan ng pamamayag na mukhang wala naman siyang pinagkatandaan.

Ang kay Jay ay hindi isang well-meaning piece of advice for these “bagitong reporters” to do better in their job. Ang sa kanya’y makapang-alipusta o “mema” lang as the hidden subtext behind all this mud-slinging is one which borders on inggit.
Inggit dahil mukhang walang network is ever interested in getting him to face the cameras again. Inggit dahil ang mga binanggit niyang pangalan shine brightly in a career where Jay has proven to be a pathetic failure.
As for Arnold and the rest of the GMA guys marahil, respeto na lang din ‘yon para kay Mel Tiangco na dating partner ni Jay (whatever their past was). Higit sa lahat, respeto ‘yon sa kanilang napiling propesyon na sumasakop sa kanilang pananagutan sa mga taong hinahatiran nila ng kanilang mga ibinabalita.
Arnold, Karen, Alvin, Lourd (na isang Palanca awardee who we think won’t waste his precious time on picking a fight with Jay who’s a croaking ‘Palaka’ honoree) are accountable to their audience sa pamamagitan ng kanilang mga istorya alinsunod sa layunin ng pamamahayag.
Magbalik tayo sa fundamentals o intro to masscom, at ito’y to inform, to educate, to entertain and to empower.
Mapanganib ang idle mind meron si Jay Sonza.
“Bigyan ng raket ‘yan!” para tumahimik.
