Reading: 1 Cor 15:1-8 Gospel:John14:6-14
Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me. If you know me, you will know the Father also; indeed you know him and you have seen him.”
Philip asked him,” Lord, show us the Father and that is enough.” Jesus said to him, “What! I have been with you so long and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever sees me sees the Father; how can you say: ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
“All that I say to you, I do not say of myself. The Father who dwells in me is doing his own work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; at least believe it on the evidence of these works that I do.
“Truly, I say to you, the one who believes in me will do the same works that I do; and he will even do greater than these, for I am going to the Father. Everything you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. And everything you ask in calling upon my Name, I will do.”

When Jesus identified himself as “the Life (verse 6),” he proclaimed himself as prolife. By saying that “the Father who dwells in me is doing his own work (verse 10)”, he declared that he was a pro-God person allowing the Father to work through him. And when he asked his disciples the question, “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me (verse 10)”, he was reminding them of his close relationship with his Father. This intimate “Father-Son” relationship indicates a pro-family disposition.
Because Jesus is pro-life, pro-family, and pro-God, we can more or less anticipate his line up of candidates if he were to vote in the coming elections. He wouldn’t go for candidates who are for divorce, abortion, same sex union, extra-judicial killing, and death penalty. We all agree on this point. But a scrutiny about how our choice approximates the choice of Jesus can spark an argument. People prefer to close an eye on the “Jesus criteria” at the casting of ballots. Then when their wrong choices boomerang on them they raise their weary eyes to God to ask for help, never to ask for forgiveness for their irresponsible exercise of their right to vote.
Jesus himself said, “Truly, I say to you, the one who believes in me will do the same works that I do” (John 14:12). Although there weren’t any election exercises yet in the time of Jesus similar to ours, Jesus couldn’t have intended to exempt the exercise of our right of suffrage when he said this.— Rev. Fr.
