Obama nangako ng ‘rock-solid commitment’ sa pagdepensa sa PH

TINIYAK ni US President Barack Obama na kasing tigas ng bato ang paninindigan ng Estados Unidos na ipagtatanggol ang Pilipinas sa gitna ng patuloy na banta na kinakaharap nito mula sa China kaugnay ng pinag-aagawang West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

“As a treaty ally, we have a rock solid commitment to the defense of the Philippines. And part of our goal is to continue to help our treaty partners build up capacity, to make sure that the architecture of both defense work, but also humanitarian work, and other important activities in the region are coordinated more effectively,” sabi ni Obama sa isang maikling press conference nila ni Pangulong Aquino matapos ang kanilang bilateral meeting sa Sofitel Philippine Plaza sa Pasay City Miyerkules ng umaga.

Kasabay nito, sinabi ni Obama na makakatulong ang implementasyon ng Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) para higit pang mapalakas ng Pilipinas ang depensa nito.

Idinagdag ni Obama na bagamat hindi kasama ang Amerika sa mga bansang nag-aagawan sa South China Sea, suportado nito ang proseso na idaan ito sa international arbitration na ikareresolba ng isyu.
“And we look forward to working with all parties to move disputes through these channels,” dagdag ni Obama.

Kumpiyansa rin si Obama na kakatigan ng Korte Suprema ang legalidad ng EDCA.

“But we are confident that it is going to get done and we are going to be able to implement effectively the provisions and the ideas that have come forward during the course of these discussions,” ayon kay Obama.

Idinagdag ni Obama na dapat ay matigil na rin ang reclamation ng China sa South China Sea.

Sinabi naman ni Aquino na hindi nila napag-usapan ni Obama kung paano makukumbinsi ang ibang bansa na sumama sa arbitration.

“But we have been discussing with some of the other claimants who have been asking us our experience and the studies we have done leading us to the arbitration mode,” sabi ni Aquino.
