BUKOD sa video game addiction, isa rin sa kinikilalang mental health condition ng World Health Organization ay ang sex addiction.
Isinama ng WHO ang sex addiction, na tinawag na “compulsive sexual behavior disorder — sa pinakahuling bersyon ng International Classification of Diseases, na isinapubliko noong Hunyo 18.
Batay sa dokumento, inilarawan ang “compulsive sexual behavior disorder” bilang “a persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges resulting in repetitive sexual behavior.”
“The disorder have been classified as repetitive sexual activities that become the focus of one person, which results to neglecting his/her health or other activities.”
Ibig sabihin, ang isang tao na adik sa sex ay naka-pokus lamang sa pakikipag-sex at hindi na iniisip kung anong masamang maidudulot nito sa kanyang kalusugan. Wala na rin siya sa pokus na gawin ang iba pang mga gawain.
“It also cited unsuccessful attempts to reduce sexual behavior, and continuing such activities despite harmful consequences, while deriving little or no satisfaction from it,” ayon pa sa pag-aaral.
Sinabi pa ng WHO na masasabing sex addicts ang mga tao kung nakakaramdam sila ng mga sintomas sa loob ng anim na buwan o mahi-git pa at nagreresulta sa “distress or significant impairment in personal, family, social, educatio-nal, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.”
Ayon naman sa miyembro ng Royal College of Psychiatrists ng United Kingdom na si Dr. Valerie Voon, ang mga taong may ganitong disorder ay “tends to [have it] hidden as it’s shameful as those who are addicts do not seek help.”
“Adding this to the WHO list is an excellent step for patients, as it allows them to recognize that they are suffering with a problem,” sabi ng report ng The Sun. “It takes it out of the sha-dows and means they are able to seek help for it.”
