Gospel: Luke 12:1-7

Then Jesus spoke to his disciples in this way: “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be made known. Whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in daylight, and what you have whispered in hidden places, will be proclaimed from the housetops.

“Do not fear those who put to death the body and after that can do no more. (…) Fear the One who after killing you is able to throw you into hell. This one you must fear. Don’t you get five sparrows for two pennies? Yet not one of them has been forgotten by God. Even the hairs of your head have been numbered. So do not fear: are you not worth more than a flock of sparrows?”

D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE
(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)

A story is told of a childless king who was looking from among his subjects for a successor. He summoned ten of the finest young men in his kingdom and gave them a seed each to grow in a year’s time. After one year, the candidates came back proud of their grown up plant except Daryl who came with an empty pot. Despite his dedication to take care of the seed, nothing sprouted until time brought him before the mighty presence of the king with nothing but an empty pot. He got the shock of his life when the king raised his hand and proclaimed him his successor. The king explained that the seeds he had distributed to the ten aspirants were boiled seeds. Only Daryl was real, the rest were ambitious hypocrites.

The king made this experiment because he knew the perils a hypocrite king could bring to his kingdom. Jesus felt the same thing. That is why he warned the people saying, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy.” The juxtaposition of the word yeast with the word hypocrisy is thought-provoking. As yeast increases the size of dough without increasing its quantity, so hypocrisy makes someone appear big without increasing his substance.

Hypocrites bloat in self-proclaimed greatness. They bounce around spending life in pursuit of power to pump more air to their ego. But they can explode anytime and expose their true worth. Meanwhile they spend life without direction, stability and substance. What kind of stewards will they be of God’s kingdom? They are like those aspirants who stood before the king offering pots with impressive sprouts. Under the soil the king could not find the genuine seed he was expecting to find. As the king dismissed them all, so will God banish from his kingdom all hypocrites.– (Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM. Email:[email protected].
