Sabillo idedepensa ang WBO title vs Rodriguez

PATUTUNAYAN ni World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight champion Merlito Sabillo na taglay pa niya ang tikas ng isang world champion sa pagtaya sa titulo laban kay Mexican Francisco Rodriguez sa Arena Monterrey, Mexico sa Linggo.

Galing ang 30-anyos na si Sabillo sa hindi impresibong split draw decision laban kay Carlos Buitrago ng Nicaragua noong Nobyembre 30 sa Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Para mapaghandaan ang labang ito, si Sabillo ay ipinadala sa San Diego, California para sa puspusang pagsasanay.

“It’s a chance for him to prove himself after his fight against Carlos Buitrago,” wika ni ALA boxing vice president Dennis Canete na dumating ng Mexico noong Miyerkules kasama si Sabillo at trainer Edito Villamor.

Ito ang ikatlong title defense ng tubong Toboso, Negros Occidental sa hawak na titulo.

Napanalunan ni Sabillo ang interim title nang kunin ang eighth-round technical knockout panalo kay Luis De La Rosa ng Colombia noong Marso 9, 2013.

Umakyat ang dating lehitimong WBO champion na si Moises Fuentes sa mas mataas na dibisyon para tuluyang maibigay kay Sabillo ang kampeonato.

Nanalo siya kay Jorle Estrada ng Colombia noong Hulyo 13 bago sinagupa ni Buitrago at sinuwerte na naitakas ang tabla sa labanan.

Nakuha ni Rodriguez (13-2, 9 KOs) ang karapatang labanan si Sabillo (23-0-1, 12 KOs) dahil nasa ikasiyam na puwesto ito sa WBO ratings.

Pangalawang laban ito ng 20-anyos na challenger sa taon at una niyang tinalo ang kababayang si Ernesto Guerrero sa technical decision noong Enero 18.
