NAGKASUNDO ang mga kasaping-bansa ng United Nations (UN) sa ika-27 Climate Change Conference (COP27) na magtatag ng isang pondong tutulong sa mahihirap na bansang sumasalo sa epekto ng climate change, at nagpahayag si reigning Miss Eco International Kathleen Paton kaugnay ng panukala.
Nakausap ng Inquirer ang reynang Aklanon sa “Empyreal Glamour” digital media launch sa Estancia Mall sa Pasig City noong isang buwan, at tinanong kung sa palagay niya ay sapat na ang panukalang pondo.
“No, because although there’s going to be a lot of well-developed countries out there that are supporting more catastrophic areas, it’s really the work of the government here, especially in the Philippines for example, with us,” tugon niya.
Binanggit din niya ang puwesto ng bansa sa ring of fire, at sinabi pang “we get hit by 20 typhoons on average a year. It’s up to us, the [local government units], the government, the higher ups to really do something.”
Tinukoy ng 24-taong-gulang na modelong Australian-Filipino ang halaga ng paghahanda at pag-iwas. “We need to help the people, educate them on ways to prevent situations. For example, how to evacuate, how to stand up from the issues that arise after catastrophes,” dinagdag niya.
Sinabi ni Paton na nauunawaan niya ang pinagmulan ng mga kasaping-bansa ng UN nang ipanukala ang pondo. “I respect and applaud their job, but it’s really up to the countries themselves to do something about it. But there’s hope with that support,” pagpapatuloy niya.
Para sa kanya, mapaiigting ang pagkilos kaugnay ng climate change kung masusukol ang kurapsyon. “When we allocate the right amount of money or equally putting the money in certain situations, certain sectors of the government like education, health, the environment, agriculture, employment, that’s where we will be able to actually rise out of the issues with poverty, helping the elderly, rise up and heal from these catastrophes,” ipinaliwanag niya.
