DALAWANG kabataang Filipino-Chinese ang may tungkulin ngayong katawanin ang makabagong “Chinoy” makaraang magwagi sa 2022 Mister and Miss Chinatown pageant sa The Theater at Solaire ng Solaire Resort and Casino noong Oct. 30.

Dinaig ni Kevin Lao ang siyam na iba pang kandidato upang manahin nag titulo mula kay Justin Yap, habang siyam na kandidata naman ang tinalo ni Berjayneth Chee upang tanggapin ang korona mula kay Cassandra Chan.

Nagwagi sina Yap at Chan sa isang virtual competition na isinagawa noong 2020, sa kasagsagan ng mga paghihigpit bunsod ng COVID-19 pandemic. Walang itinanghal na patimpalak noong 2021 kaya pinalawig pa ang termino nila nang isang taon.

Makasaysayan din ang pagtatanghal ng taunang patimpalak ngayong taon dahil sa pagkakaroon ng unang ladlad na kasapi ng LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and others) community bilang kalahok sa dibisyong panlalaki—si Vince Aseron mula Parañaque City na itinuturing ang sarili bilang “androgynous-femme presenting nonbinary.” Second runner-up siya sa pagtatapos ng patimpalak.

Sinabi ni Alvin Tan, pangulo ng pageant producer na ChinoyTV, sa isang naunang panayam: “We want to show to the public that the ‘Chinoy’ community now [is] starting to be open.”

Ayon pa sa kanya, naghahanap ang patimpalak ng mga kinatawan ng “modern” Filipino-Chinese community. Tinipon sa pageant ang mga Chinoy mula sa iba’t ibang pamayanan, hindi lang sa Metro Manila, sa pagsali ng mga kalahok mula Baguio City, Mindanao, Hong Kong, at Estados Unidos.

Hinirang bilang first runner-up sina Adrian See at Lovely Lim, habang katuwang ni Aserin bilang second runner-up si Loraine Wong-

Ipapaloob ang mahahalagang bahagi ng coronation show sa huling episode ng docuseries na “Chinese by Blood, Filipino by Heart” sa direksyon ng Emmy award-winning Filipino-American director na si Mike Carandang. Mapapanood ito sa CNN Philippines sa Nob. 6.
