UNANG nakamit ng Pilipinas ang panalo nito sa Miss United Continents pageant noong 2016 nang magwagi si Jeslyn Santos, na siya ring una at natatanging Asyanang nakasungkit sa korona sa patimpalak na teritoryo ng mga Latina. Ngunit maaari na itong magbago.
Nasa Ecuador ngayon ang pambato ng bansa na si Camelle Mercado upang maibigay sa Pilipinas ang pangalawa nitong panalo sa 16-taong-gulang na pandaigdigang patimpalak. At itinuturing niyang alas ay ang national director na isa ring dating reyna—si Santos mismo.

Itinalaga ni Santos si Mercado bilang kinatawan ng Pilipinas sa 2022 Miss United Continents pageant. Huling napanood si Mercado sa 2019 Miss World Philippines pageant.
Naniniwala si Mercado na bilang ang natatanging kandidatang may dating Miss United Continents titleholder na national diretor ang magbibigay sa kanya ng malaking bentahe sa patimpalak, kahit pa hindi siya bihasa sa Spanish, ang wikang ginagamit sa paligsahan.
Lubos umano ang naging suporta ni Santos, na “hands-on with me and I feel very fortunate because of that. She gave me a lot of tips and advice that I’ll apply on my journey in Ecuador,” sinabi ni Mercado sa Inquirer sa isang online interview.
Maganda rin ang pakiramdam ni Mercado bilang isang appointed representative sapagkat appointed beauties din ang namayagpag kamakailan sa mga pandaigdigang entablado—sina 2020 Miss Aura International Alexandra Faith Garcia, 2021 Miss Global Shane Tormes, at 2021 Miss Elite first runner-up Shanon Tampon.
“I feel even more privileged and honored to represent our country. It just proves that being appointed is not a disadvantage in winning an international crown. Whether appointed or winning a national pageant, we only have one aspiration— to give pride to our country,” ani Mercado.
Kung siya ang magwawagi, sinabi ni Mercado na babalik siya sa Ecuador “to collaborate and work with [the organizers] to support the cancer survivors and promote tourism in the City of Portoviejo as the organization aims to share a renewed and rebuilt view of the city after it was devastated by an earthquake last 2016.”
