Team Pilipinas vs Italy sa 2019 FIBA World Cup opener

SISIMULAN ng Philippine men’s basketball team ang matarik at matinding kampanya para makamit ang rurok ng tagumpay sa basketball sa paglarga ng 2019 FIBA World Cup sa China ngayong Sabado.

Makakasagupa ng Pilipinas, No. 31 ranked sa mundo, ang world No. 13 Italy ganap na alas-7:30 ng gabi sa pag-arangkada ng kanilang preliminary round matches sa Group D sa Foshan, China.

Sa iba pang Group D match, makakatapat ng No. 4 Serbia ang No. 39 Angola.

Makakaharap ng Team Pilipinas ang Serbia, na pamumunuan ng All-Star at All-NBA First Team member na si Nikola Jokic, sa Lunes, Setyembre 2, bago makatunggali ang African champion Angola sa Miyerkules, Setyembre 4.

May kabuuang walong grupo na binubuo ng tig-apat na koponan ang magsasalpukan sa prelims, kung saan ang top two teams kada bracket ang aabante sa round-of-16 na mag-uumpisa sa Setyembre 6.

Kailangan ng mga Pinoy cagers na manalo ng dalawang beses para makalagpas sa Group D play at mangarap na makausad sa 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Ang PH men’s basketball team na sasabak sa torneo ay kinabibilangan nina team captain Gabe Norwood, naturalized player Andray Blatche, five-time PBA season Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo, Paul Lee, Roger Pogoy, Troy Rosario, Japeth Aguilar, Mark Barroca, Raymund Almazan, Kiefer Ravena, at ang mga PBA rookies na sina CJ Perez at Robert Bolick.

Ang title favorite United States ay sasabak sa aksyon ngayong Linggo kontra Czech Republic sa Group E. Kasama nila sa nasabing grupo ang Japan at Turkey.

Group A: Poland, Venezuela, Ivory Coast at China
Group B: Russia, Nigeria, Argentina and Korea
Group C: Iran, Puerto Rico, Spain at Tunisia

Group G: Dominican Republic, Jordan, France at Germany
Group H: Canada, Australia, Senegal at Lithuania.
