TINALO ni Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So si GM Zaven Andriasian ng Armenia sa playoffs para makuha ang kauna-unahang gintong medalya ng Pilipinas sa pagtatapos ng chess tournament ng 27th Summer Universiade Lunes ng gabi sa Kazan, Russia.
Tinapos ni So ang nine-round tournament na may 6.5 puntos at nakatabla niya sa unahan si Andriasian at pitong iba pang manlalaro na may katulad na 6.5 puntos.
Pagkatapos ng tatlong tie-break ay tabla pa rin sa unahan sina So at Andriasian kaya kinailangan nilang maglaro ng Armageddon game para sa gintong medalya.
“I really did my best, especially in the Armageddon game, to win the Universaide gold medal for our country. It was not easy because there were many good players here,” sabi ng 19-anyos na Filipino champion.
Ang kampanya ng mga Pilipino dito ay sinuportahan ng Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) sa tulong ng San Miguel Corporation, Agri-Nurture, Inc. (ANI), Bestank, Healthy Options and Cobra Energy Drinks. Nagkasya sa silver medal si Andriasian habang napunta naman ang bronze medal kay GM Li Chao ng China.
