Ingat sa ‘deadly’ gift-EcoWaste
Umapela ang EcoWaste Coalition sa mga magbibigay ng regalo na piliin ang mga bagay na hindi ginamitan ng toxic chemicals na may masamang epekto sa kalusugan. Ayon kay Thony Dizon, chemical safety campaigner ng EcoWaste, ang presyo ng mga bagay na mayroong toxic chemicals at wala ay hindi nagkakalayo. “As we all know, not all gift items are created equal. As not all products are regulated or are compliant with quality and safety standards, it is not uncommon to find harmful chemicals in some gift items above levels of concern,” ani Dizon. “These items are inadequately labeled, providing not even a clue on their toxic composition.” Namili ang EcoWaste ng iba’t ibang panregalo at natuklasan nila na nagtataglay ng lead at cadmium ang marami sa mga ito. Ayon sa EcoWaste ang cadmium ay mayroong masamang epekto sa kidney, skeletal at respiratory system. Itinuturing din itong isang human carcinogen. Ang lead naman ay nakakaapekto sa neurologic, hematologic, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, at renal systems ng tao. Ang cadmium at lead ay kabilang sa “ten chemicals of major public health concern” ng World Health Organization.
