2nd Week of Advent
Our Lady of Guadalupe
1st Reading: Is 48:17–19Gospel: Mt 11:16–19
Jesus said to the crowds, “Now, to what can I compare the people of this day? They are like children sitting in the marketplace, about whom their companions complain: ‘We played the flute for you but you would not dance. We sang a funeral song but you would not cry!’“For John came fasting and people said: ‘He is possessed.’ Then the Son of Man came, he ate and drank, and people said: ‘Look at this man! A glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet the outcome will prove Wisdom to be right.”

Assimilated Life Experience)
People never do things right before God’s eyes. This was Jesus’ point when he complained about how unresponsive the people of his times were. It was not a simple case of impairment of the senses but undue focus on what gratifies the flesh. He compared those people to children sitting in the marketplace, against whom their companions complain: “We played the flute for you but you would not dance. We sang a funeral song but you would not cry!” In unveiled language Jesus explained: “For John came fasting and people said: ‘He is possessed.’ Then the Son of Man came, he ate and drank, and people said: ‘Look at this man! A glutton and drunkard…!’ ” In plain language, those people never did things right before God’s eyes.
We too rarely do things right. We can cite a few basic examples. When it is time to feast on a legitimate celebration we go on a diet. But when it is time to fast as in the time of the Holy Week, people go to Bantayan Island in Cebu where eating pork is allowed by special indult. The same is true in our relationships. When certain family members are alive, we wish they were not always around, or even wish them dead. And when they are finally dead, we cry our hearts out and wish they’d come back to life. Something similar can be said of our work attitude. When we have no work we move heaven and earth to find one for us. But when we are employed, we drag our feet to the workplace on a blue Monday and wish it’s always a holiday.
When the same confusion happens in the realm of spirituality what results is lukewarm Christianity. God abhors the tepid and the lukewarm. Speaking through the nimble pen of the author of the Book of Revelations God says: “Because you are neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you” (Revelations 3:15). Let us take advantage of the Season of Advent to reorient our lives. With proper focus and with proper guidance from the Holy Spirit we can do things right before God’s eyes. -(Atty.) Rev. Fr.
