DINAIG ni Roel Abelgas ang kapwa FIDE Master na si Fran Minh Thang ng Vietnam kahapon para makasama sa anim na chess players na nasa ikaapat na puwesto matapos ang pitong round ng Philippine Sports Commission-Puregold International Chess Challenge sa Subic Bay Peninsular Hotel sa Olongapo City, Zambales.

Ang 36-anyos na si Abelgas, na puntirya ang ikatlo at huling norm para masungkit ang International Master title, ay sumandal sa mahusay na opening variation para daigin si Tran sa 47 moves ng Gruenfeld.

Ang panalo ni Abelgas, na nagsisilbing coach ng ilang college squads kabilang ang Perpetual Help sa NCAA, ay sumunod sa pagwawagi niya kay IM Oliver Dimakiling na naging pinakamahabang laro sa torneo na isang 126-move marathon sa ikaanim na round.

Umangat si Abelgas sa 4.5 puntos para umakyat sa No. 4 spot kasama sina GM Mark Paragua, No. 8 seed Kirill Stupak ng Belarus, No. 4 Levan Pantsulaia ng Georgia, No. 2 Anton Demchenko ng Russia at No. 5 Mikheil Mchedlishvili ng Georgia.

Nakahirit ng tabla si Demchenko kay top seed GM Wang Hao ng China sa 42 moves ng Ruy Lopez, naghati sa puntos sina Stupak at Pantsulaia matapos ang 92 moves ng King’s Indian duel habang sina Paragua at Mchedlishvili ay nagkasundo agad sa tabla matapos ang 20 moves ng Trompovsky.

Ginapi ni No. 6 GM Vladislav Kovalev ng Belarus si No. 3 GM Boris Savchenko ng Russia matapos ang 37 moves ng Ruy Lopez para makasalo si Wang sa itaas sa natipong 5.5 puntos.
