INAABANGAN ng mga kababaihang mahihilig sa basketball ang nalalapit na pagbubukas ng Women’s Philippine Basketball Association (WPBA).
Ito ang isiniwalat ng ilang miyembro ng pambansang koponan na Perlas Pilipinas na ikinatuwa ang nakatakdang pagsasagawa ng test tournament na kasabay sa muling pagbubukas ng ika-42nd season ng Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
“It will open up opportunities for all the women playing basketball, kahit sa collegiate at university, and also chances to be discovered and play for the country in representing our flag in international event,” sabi ni Perlas Pilipinas guard Raiza Rose Dy.
Kinumpirma naman ni Perlas Pilipinas coach Patrick Aquino ang nalalapit na pagbubuo sa professional league para sa kababaihan.
“I was just told that there will be two conferences, of which will start in January to July in preparation for the SEA Games,” sabi ni Aquino. “It will be school-based teams muna but with sponsors na kanilang ire-represent.”
Ang torneo ay isasailalim sa pamamahala ng Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) katulong ang pamunuan ng PBA.
“A letter was already sent to all schools that have women basketball teams, including us in National University,” sabi ni Aquino.
Ipinaliwanag pa ni Aquino na paghihiwa-hiwalayin ang mga miyembro ng pambansang koponan sa bawat sasaling mga unibersidad o grupo.
“The schools are allowed to get their sponsors like Blackwater, or any other products that will support them throughout the staging of the tournament,” sabi pa ni Aquino.
Ang mga miyembro ng Perlas Pilipinas ay binubuo naman nina Dy, Chovi Borja, Shelley Anne Gupilan, Camille Sambile, Marizze Andrea Tongco, Jack Danielle Animam, Cindy Resultay, Gemma Miranda, Afril Bernardino, Allana May Lim, Sofia Isabella Roman at Merenciana Arayi.
“Definititly, it will be very healthy for our lady basketeers dahil dito natin makikita kung sino ang mas gumagaling at kung sino ang level nila ay umaangat lalo na sa experience at makikita natin ang mga batang players,” dagdag pa ni Aquino.
Dalawang koponan naman ang agad na nagkumpirma ng kanilang paglahok at ito ay ang FEU at NU Alumni.
