Rappler boss, ex-research writer guilty sa cyber libel

GUILTY ang hatol ng Manila Regional Trial Court kay Maria Ressa, Executive Editor at Chief Executive Officer ng Rappler, at dati nitong researcher-writer na si Reynaldo Santos Jr., sa kasong paglabag sa Cybercrime Prevention Act.

“The exercise of a freedom should and must be used with due regard to the freedom of others. As Nelson Mandela said ‘for to be free is not merely cast off one’s chains but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom od others,” saad ng desisyon.

Hinatulan ng anim na buwan hanggang anim na taong pagkakakulong ang dalawa.

Sila ay pinagbabayad din ng P200,000 moral damages at P200,000 exemplary damages sa negosyanteng si Wilfredo Keng.

Ang kaso ay nag-ugat sa artikulo na inilathala ng Rappler noong 2012. Pinahiram umano ni Keng ng sports utility vehicle ang noon ay Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Si Keng ay minamatyagan din umano ng National Security Council kaugnay ng human trafficking at drug smuggling. Ang artikulo ay na-report noong 2014 matapos itama ang typographical error.

Isinampa ni Keng ang reklamo noong 2017.
