“With or without COVID-19, internet access is critical in democratizing access to information and pushing the boundaries of development in this day and age. It can better link farmers to markets, decongest road traffic as work from home arrangements would be much better, and now with COVID, distance learning becomes a first default mode to provide continuity in our children’s education,” ani Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas.
“The DICT should also prioritize extending the connection of GovNet to establishments carrying out critical functions such as hospitals, quarantine facilities, laboratories, and barangay halls in the provinces,” dagdag pa ng three-term solon.
“Rural areas must be served as well. Apart from building more towers, internet service providers can actually be made to share tower facilities and other passive infrastructure. ISPs and value-added service providers can be allowed to connect directly to international satellites for broadband connectivity, especially for the unserved and underserved areas. These do not need Congressional action. An Executive Order can be issued to put this into effect,” ani Vargas.
Nanawagan din si Vargas sa Department of Interior and Local Government at Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) na rebesahin ang licensing and permit requirements ng mga local government units para mapabilis ang pagtatayo ng tower sa maraming lugar.
