“The global average case fatality rate is 6.4 percent and this is superseded by Italy with 12.9% case fatality rate and Spain at 10.5 percent and Indonesia with 9.4 percent. The Philippines in comparison has a case fatality rate of 6.6%,” ani David.

“It really shows that most of our confirmed cases and admitted cases are those in the working-age group and older—20 years and above. But if we look at our deaths, its really the older persons group at 50 years old and older,” dagdag pa ni David.

“We have to modernize our disease surveillance capacity nationwide. The system that we operate with now, with the DOH and the Epidemiology Bureau, that’s basically the system I was using 17 years ago, with some improvements of course, but still not quite modernized,” ani Dayrit.

“You have to ramp up and modernize our laboratory capacities. . .creating a Philippine Center for Disease Control of course is one way to move forward, but that’s not enough,” ani Dayrit. “Over the short term, which is really during this pandemic, it’s speed, speed, speed. Prevent to detect, to isolate, and to treat. We have to implement these fundamentals nationwide.”
