A living museum of freshwater creatures

HINDI lamang sa dagat matatagpuan ang mga naglalakihang mga isda. Maging sa ilog o sa lawa ay may mga tinatawag na “monster fish” na mas malalaki kaysa sa mga ordinaryong mga isda.

Kung nais n’yong makakita ng mga ganitong klaseng nilalang, magtungo lamang sa Las Farolas na matatagpuan sa Frontera Verde, Ortigas Ave, Pasig City. Malapit lang ito sa Tiendesitas, Fun Ranch at Ark Avilon Zoo at madaling puntahan.

Nagbukas ang “living museum” na ito nito lamang Abril at tiyak na kagigiliwan itong pasyalan hindi lamang ng mga bata at mag-aaral.

“Ang mga isda dito ay galing sa four continents: Asia, Africa, America and Europe,” sabi Bernie Repalbor, chief operating officer ng Las Farolas.

“We do not have in our exhibit here local fishes dahil madalas naman natin itong nakikita sa palengke o sa mga aquarium. Lahat ng mga isda dito galing abroad.”

Ang Las Farolas ay hango sa ideya at konsepto ni Henry Babiera at ng yumaong si Don Rafael Ortigas Jr. Ayon kay Repalbor mahigit tatlong taon at P300 milyon ang ginugol ng Las Farolas bago ito binuksan sa publiko.

Ilan sa mga attraction sa Las Farolas ang arapaima, piranha, arowana, freshwater eel at stingray at mga exotic cat fish.
Ayon kay Repalbor, umaabot sa 200,000 ang populasyon  ng isda  sa Las Farolas mula sa 2,500 species.

Ang pinaka-expensive dito, aniya,  ay ang very rare na  Australian lungfish na nagkakahalaga umano ng $1.8 milyon ang isa.
Ang kakaibang isda na ito ay may single dorsal lung na ginagamit para magkaroon ng oxygen supply.

Kadalasan ay umaahon ito sa tubig para kumuha ng hangin na tulad ng mga balyena. Dagdag pa ni Repalbor na may kaukulang permit naman mula sa Bureau of Fisheries ang Aquatic Resources (BFAR) ang mga isdang kanilang inangkat maging ang mga piranha.

Oo nga’t carnivorous o kumakain ng karne ang mga piranha pero hindi naman daw nito inaatake ang mga divers na naglilinis ng kanilang habitat.

“Wag ka lang siguro masugatan ay maamoy  nila ang dugo,” aniya. Bukod sa nakapagbibigay ng aliw at kaalaman sa mga tao, layunin din ng Las Farolas na pag-aralan, protektahan at pangalagaan ang mga isdang ito.

Marami pang ibang species ang kasalukuyang nasa Research Center, Conservation, Breeding at Growing Facility sa Tagaytay at Paranaque.

At ang mga ito ay ililipat sa Las Farolas Living Museum sa mga darating na buwan para naman daw makakita ng mga bagong isda ang mga guests.

More tourists expected following lifting of EU ban on PAL

THE Department of Tourism   said it expects the number of European tourists to significantly increase following the European Union’s decision to lift a ban on Philippine Airlines flying in its airspace.

In a statement, Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez Jr. said the EU’s move is an excellent opportunity for Philippine tourism as PAL will be able to effectively augment the existing services by foreign carriers that cater to tourists in the region.

According to him, the United Kingdom, Germany and France are among the key European markets with stable influx to the country.

“European tourists have already registered 213,598 visitors from January to May this year, which marks an 8.5-percent increase from the 196,794 European visitors registered for the same period in 2012,” Jimenez said.

“We therefore expect a significant increase from these markets, to include those from adjacent countries, once the PAL flights are made available,” he added.

Jimenez said the lifting of the ban would greatly help in achieving the government’s target of 10 million international visitors by 2016.

“As we work towards our goal of 10 million foreign tourists by 2016, we need our international air seats and connectivity greatly enhanced, in addition to our ongoing internal development work on infrastructure, destination and facilities,” the tourism secretary said.

He also expressed optimism and confidence that other Philippine carriers will address their respective safety issues that would allow them to gain access to tourist-rich Europe.

Jimenez added that the tourism industry looks forward to the continued support of various government agencies for improvements in airport infrastructure development, aviation safety and security, and air services agreements “so that we can continue to show to the world why it’s more fun in the Philippines.”
