All set for PCYAA Season 6

Henry Liao - October 08, 2018 - 07:58 PM

SEASON 6 of the Philippine Ching Yuen Athletic Association (PCYAA) will get underway on Saturday, October 13, with the start of the basketball competitions in the 14-Under Aspirants Division at the Uno High School gym.

A four-game bill is set for opening day.

Grace Christian College takes on Jubilee Christian Academy in the first game at 1 p.m., followed by the encounter between Pace Academy and MGC New Life Christian Academy at 2:30 p.m., Saint Jude Catholic School battling Uno High School at 4 p.m., and Philippine Cultural College facing Saint Stephen’s High School at 5:30 p.m.

Three more games are to be played at the state-of-the-art MGC NLCA gym the following day (October 14) — Jubilee Christian Academy vs. Pace Academy at 10:30 a.m., MGC NLCA vs. Saint Jude Catholic School at 12 noon, and Saint Stephen’s High School vs. Grace Christian College at 1:30 p.m.

Grace Christian College is the defending champion in the eight-school Aspirants Division competitions, having defeated Pace Academy in a maximum three games in last year’s finals.

Mentored by rookie PCYAA coach Steven Tan, Grace copped its first title of any kind in the Chinese-Filipino basketball landscape since 1970. GCC also went on to capture the 14-Under diadem in the Federation tournament, upsetting perennial power Chiang Kai Shek College in the finals to half the young Blue Dragons’ nine-year reign.

Meanwhile, the 12-Under Developmental tournament will commence on Sunday, October 21, at the MGC NLCA gym. Reigning champion Saint Stephen’s High School will open its title defense against MGC NLCA in the main game of the three-game Developmental bill that will simultaneously be held with a pair of Aspirants contests.

There are four divisions in basketball. These are 12-Under Developmental, 14-Under Aspirants, Boys Juniors and Ladies High School.
Competitions in the Boys Juniors and Ladies divisions will begin in January 2019.

The reigning basketball champions are Saint Stephen’s High School (Developmental), Grace Christian College (Aspirants), Saint Jude Catholic School (Boys Juniors), and Jubilee Christian Academy (Ladies HS).

The host for Season 6 PCYAA is MGC New Life Christian Academy, which is the two-time defending titlist in ladies’ high school volleyball.

Aside from basketball (four divisions) and ladies’ volleyball, other disciplines in the 2018-19 PCYAA calendar are table tennis, chess, badminton and, for the first time, swimming and cheerdance.

A multi-sports league, the PCYAA is composed of nine Chinese-Filipino high schools in the Metro area.

Active are host MGC-NLCA, Saint Jude Catholic School, Philippine Cultural College, Uno High School, Grace Christian College, Jubilee Christian Academy, Pace Academy and second-year member Saint Stephen’s High School.
