PALABAN si Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno sa kanyang speech, bagamat hindi naman natuwa ang kanyang mga kapwa justices na dumalo rin sa 30th anniversary at 23rd national convention ng Philippine Women Judges Association sa Manila Hotel.
Sa kanyang talumpati, binatikos ni Sereno ang House committee on justice dahil hindi umano siya binigyan ng oportunidad na harapin ang mga nag-aakusa sa kanya.
“The [House] Committee on Justice has denied me my right to confront and cross-examine the witnesses, and resource persons arraigned against me is nothing but blatantly unfair. I ask that we dispel all thoughts and impulses of malice and ill will; we must denounce gossiping and unfounded innuendos; we do not judge anyone until all the evidence is in,” sabi ni Sereno sa kanyang talumpati.
Naka-indefinite leave si Sereno bilang paghahanda sa pag-akyat ng impeachment laban sa kanya.
“As I must fight to have my day at the Senate impeachment court, this is a fight for judicial independence, for the right of every member of the court to confront her accuser face-to-face in a trial type proceeding,” ayon pa kay Sereno.
Pumalag din si Sereno sa inihaing quo warranto laban sa kanya sa Korte Suprema na naglalayong tanggalin siya sa puwesto ng hindi na dumadaan sa impeachment trial.
“Sila ang nagsimula bakit ayaw nilang tapusin? Napakaaga naman yata para umamin sila na wala silang napala kundi matinding kabiguan kaya’t kung anu-ano na lamang ang gimik ang ginagawa nila masunod lamang ang kanilang nais,” sabi pa ni Sereno.
Hindi naman pumalakpak ang karamihan ng mga associate justice na dumalo sa pagtitipon.
Sinabi naman ni Associate Justice Teresita De Castro na hindi dapat ginamit ni Sereno ang pagdiriwang para talakayin ang kanyang kaso.
“I sincerely hope that she should not have dealt with a matter that is pending with the court,” sabi ni de Castro, na siyang presidente of the PWJA.
Tanging si Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco Jr. lamang ang pumalakpak sa talumpati ni Sereno.
