TINATAYANG 40,000 tropa ng gobyerno ang ipapakalat para matiyak ang seguridad ng mga dadalo sa Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit sa bansa ngayong darating na linggo sa harap naman ng banta ng terorismo, ayon sa mga opisyal. Sinabi ni Ambassador Marciano A. Paynor Jr., director general for operations ng Asean 2017 National Organizing Council, na ayaw ng gobyerno na maulit sa Maynila ang mga pag-atake sa ibang bansa sa mga nakalipas na taon. “We can no longer consider only domestic security issues. As we all know, European capitals — London, Paris, Brussels — they all have had very serious terrorists attacks,” sabi ni Paynor. Nauna nang sinuspinde ng gobyerno ang pasok sa Metro Manila sa Abril 28 para sa nakatakdang pagdaraos ng ASEAN Summit. “We have been lucky thus far. We would not want any of these things happening here, especially if we have guests and especially as we are hosting these Asean meetings throughout the year,” dagdag ni Paynor. Sinabi naman ni Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Officer-in-Charge (OIC)  Undersecretary Catalino Cuy na wala pa namang namomonitor na banta sa pagdaraos ng summit. “There is no specific threat but we are paid to be paranoid. In our preparations, we consider all possible threats to activities,” sabi ni Cuy. Nakipagpulong si Paynor, Philippine National Police Director General Ronald Dela Rosa, at Cuy sa 9,000 pulis, sundalo at iba pang emergency personnel na siyang magbibigay ng seguridad sa summit. Tinatayang 2,000 mga delegado ang nakatakdang dumalo sa Asean, ayon pa kay Paynor.
