28th Week in Ordinary Time 1st reading: Romans 4.1-8
Gospel: Luke 12:1-7
Such a numerous crowd had gathered that they crushed one another. Then Jesus spoke to his disciples in this way,“Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be made known. Whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in daylight, and what you have whispered in hidden places, will be proclaimed from the housetops.“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who put to death the body and after that can do no more. But I will tell you whom to fear: Fear the One who after killing you is able to throw you into hell. This one you must fear. Don’t you get five sparrows for two pennies? Yet not one of them has been forgotten by God. Even the hairs of your head have been numbered. So do not fear: are you not worth more than a flock of sparrows?”
D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE
(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)
A story is told of a childless king who was looking for a successor to his throne from among his subjects. He summoned ten of the finest young men in his kingdom and gave them a seed each to grow in a year’s time. After one year all but Albert came back proud of their year-old plant. What bewildered Albert was that despite all the efforts he exerted in taking care of the seed, still nothing sprouted. Time took him to the mighty presence of the king with nothing but an empty pot. But then he got the shock of his life because the king raised his hand and proclaimed him his successor. The king explained that the seeds he had distributed to the ten aspirants were boiled seeds. Only Albert was real; the rest were ambitious hypocrites.
The king made this experiment because he knew the perils a hypocrite king would bring to his kingdom. Jesus also knew the perils hypocrite religious leaders could bring to their subjects. That is why he said: “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy.” As yeast increases the size of dough without increasing its quantity, so hypocrisy makes someone appear big without substance.
Hypocrites bloat in their self-proclaimed greatness. They bounce around spending life in pursuit of power to pump more air to their ego. But they will eventually explode. What kind stewards will they be of God’s kingdom on earth? They are like those aspirants who stood before the king offering pots with impressive sprouts. Under the soil the king could not find the genuine seed he was expecting to find. As the king dismissed them all from his presence, so will God banish from his kingdom all hypocrites. – Rev. Fr.
