Umapela kahapon ang EcoWaste Coalition sa mga pulitko na huwag magdalawang–isip sa pamimigay ng baller bands sa pangangampanya.
Ayon sa grupo ang mga baller bands na kanilang sinuri ay mayroong kemikal na lead na nakasisira ng utak at central nervous system lalo na sa mga bata.
Sa 30 biniling polyvinyl chloride rubber baller wristbands na binili ng EcoWaste sa Divisoria 27 ang nagpositibo sa lead na umaabot sa 1,325 hanggang 8,465 parts per million. Ang tatlo na wala ay hindi gawa sa PVC.
“Made-to-order baller bands are popular campaign giveaways. Sadly, not all baller bands are equal as there are types that contain harmful chemicals,” ani Thony Dizon, coordinator ng EcoWaste.
Sinabi ni Dizon na hindi makasisiguro na hindi kakagatin o isusubo ang kamay, lalo na sa mga bata, kapag nahawakan ang baller.
“While not originally intended for kids, these wrist accessories may end up in children’s hands and mouths and directly expose them to lead,” ani Dizon.
Pinayuhan ng EcoWaste ang mga kandidato na kumuha ng certificate of analysis sa mga bibilhing baller bands at iba pang materyales para sa pangangampanya.
“In this manner, political aspirants avoid spending for campaign stuff that can poison human health and harm the environment,” dagdag pa nito.
