Sol Mercado hinirang na PBA Player of the Week

SA kauna-unahang pagkakataon sa kasaysayan ng prangkisa sa PBA ay nakapagtala ng back-to-back na panalo ang Global Port upang patunayan na kaya na nitong makipagsabayan sa ibang koponan sa PLDT myDSL PBA Philippine Cup.

Sa kabila ng napakaraming pagbabagong naganap bago nag-umpisa ang season ay pinatid ng Batang Pier ang winning streak ng Meralco Bolts, 93-89, noong Miyerkules.

At noong Linggo ay naungusan nila ang title contender na Rain or Shine, 90-88, upang umangat sa 3-3 record.

Sa unahan ng pagragasang ito ay si Solomon Mercado na nagpakitang kaya niyang pamununan ang Batang Pier.

Kontra sa Bolts, ang 29-taong gulang na si Mercado ay nagtala ng personal season-high 33 puntos. Laban sa Elasto Painters ay nagbaga siya sa second half at nagtapos nang may 20 puntos at pitong assists.

Dahil dito, si Mercado ang nahirang na Accel-PBA Player of the Week para sa period na Disyembre 2-8.

Dinaig ni Mercado sa botohan ang kanyang kakamping si Jay Washington, si June Mar Fajardo ng Petron Blaze at Japeth Aguilar ng Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Kung titingnang maigi, ang dalawang koponang tinalo ng Global Port ay mga dating teams ni Mercado. Sinimulan niya ang kanyang career sa Rain or Shine bago nalipat sa Meralco. Sa kalagitnaan ng nakaraang season ay ipinamigay siya ng Bolts sa Global Port.

“I know you guys didn’t believe. Nobody really thought where we’ll be at right now. New coach in one week (before the start of the tournament), six rookies, eight new guys. Who would have thought we’d be
3-3?” ani Mercado.

Ang Global Port  ay minamanduhan ng bagong coach na si Richie Ticzon.
