Mapanganib na pekeng cosmetic binebenta sa Davao

PATULOY umano ang bentahan ng mga pekeng cosmetics na may taglay na mapanganib na mercury at lead sa Davao City.

Ayon sa EcoWaste Coalition nakabili ang mga miyembro nito ng mga skin whitening creams na lagpas sa 1 parts per million ang mercury at lipsticks na lagpas sa 20 ppm ang mercury.

Sa 20 skin whitening products na nabili ng grupo 13 ang may mercury na lagpas sa 1 ppm limit. Ang mercury level ng Erna, Jiaoli at S’Zitang creams ay 1,187-2,330 ppm. Matagal ng ipinagbawal ng Food and Drug Administration ang pagbebenta sa mga ito.

Sa 100 lipstick na nabili, 24 ang may lead levels na 118-30,500 ppm.

Ang mga counterfeit lipstick na ginamitan ng mga brand na MAC Vivaglam, Dermacol at April Skin ay mas mataas din sa 20 ppm limit ang mercury.

“Both lead and mercury are highly toxic and are not permitted as ingredients in cosmetic product formulations. The continued sale of cosmetics laden with these poisons, most of which are contraband and counterfeit items, is putting the health of consumers at risk and should be stopped,” ani Thony Dizon, chemical safety campaigner ng EcoWaste.

Nanawagan ang EcoWaste sa mga lokal na pamahalaan na umaksyon laban sa mga produktong ito.

“Aside from the health benefits that such action will bring about, halting the sale of poison cosmetics will prevent the leakage of lead and mercury into the environment, particularly when these chemicals are discharged into the wastewater and into water bodies.”

Ang mercury at lead ay neurotoxicant at endocrine disrupting chemicals na kasali sa “10 chemicals of major public health concern” ng World Health Organization.

Sa mga bata ang mercury at lead ay nagdudulot ng development delay, hirap na matuto, pagsasalita, mahinang memorya at reproductive disorders.

Sa matatanda ang mercury ay nagdudulot ito ng physical tremors, problema sa paningin, pagiging irritable at memory problems. Ang lead naman ay maaaring magresulta sa pananakit ng mga kalamnan at kasu-kasuan, high blood pressure, paghina ng memorya, mood disorders at pagkalaglag ng ipinagbubuntis.
