PROPESYONAL ka kung naglalaro ka sa ligang “play for pay.”
Ito ang sinabi kahapon ni Games and Amusement Board (GAB) chairman Abraham ‘‘Baham” Mitra na planong habulin ang mga ligang pang-komersyal sa volleyball at basketball na wala pa sa ilalim ng ahensya.
Ang GAB ay nasa ilalim ng Office of the President na gumagabay sa mga propesyonal sports ng bansa.
Ganito rin ang pananaw ni Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William “Butch” Ramirez na dumalo sa unang “Usapang Sports” na inilunsad ng Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) Huwebes sa National Press Club sa Intramuros, Maynila.
“If these players do not play for flag and country during international meets, such as the Olympics, Asian Games and SEA Games, they are already considered professional athletes,” wika ni Ramirez na diniin din ang kahalagahan ng pakikipagtulungan ng PSC sa Department of Education (DepEd) at mga Local Government Units (LGUs) upang paigtingin ang grassroots sports program ng bansa.
Binigyang babala rin ni Ramirez ang mga nagbabangayang National Sports Association (NSA) na puputulin ng PSC ang pagbibigay-suporta kung hindi nila aayusin ang gusot sa kanilang organisasyon.
Sinabi ni Mitra na muli siyang makikipagpulong sa mga opisyal ng Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), Philippine Super Liga (PSL) at Premier Volleyball League (PVL) upang ipaalala na dapat silang mapasailalim ng GAB.
“If athletes of these three leagues play for pay, there is no doubt that they are considered professional athetes, who should be under the supervision of GAB,” sabi ni Mitra.
Itinalaga ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte noong 2016 bilang GAB chairman ang three-term lawmaker mula sa Palawan na si Mitra.
Diniin ni Mitra na nakasaad sa batas na dapat kumuha ng lisensya, sumailalim sa drug testing at iba pa ang mga propesyonal na atleta sa ilalim ng GAB.
Sinabi ni Mitra na ito ay nakasaad sa Presidential Decree 871.
“Clearly players in the three commercial leagues (MPBL, PSL, PVL) are professional athletes, who receive renumeration for their services to their respective teams,” wika ni Mitra.
Sinabi ni Mitra na naiintindihan niya ang mga isyu na inilabas ng tatlong propesyonal liga ngunit wala siyang magagawa kundi ipatupad ang batas.
“Wala tayong magagawa kung ‘yung players nila na naglalaro ngayon sa commercial leagues ay nag-aaral at lumalaro pa rin sa UAAP at NCAA at iba pang ligang pang-kolehiyo. Sundin natin ang batas,” wika ni Mitra.
Sinabi ni Mitra na nasa ilalim ng GAB ang basketball, billiards, boxing, e-sports, football, golf, mixed martial arts, motocross, jetski, triathlon, water sports, football at iba pa.
“If all these professional sports can follow the law, bakit hindi iyong iba pro sports,” sabi ni Mitra.
