‘Yolanda’ a blessing in disguise

Arlyn Dela Cruz - November 18, 2013 - 03:00 AM

THE strongest storm in recent history has brought the strongest act of humanity, embracing a nation of survivors. Yolanda showed us her wrath but the world showed her mercy that is
bountiful. In that light, Yolanda came as a blessing in disguise.
More often we do not see how strong we really are not until we are put to the strongest of human tragedy of unimaginable proportion. That test came as the full extent of Yolanda’s devastation is reported one image after the other.
I do not want to take reference to the Holy Scripture, but why not? It is indeed written that in our weakest, we are strongest if we put our faith and trust only in the God Almighty. It is in the strongest of tragedy that the strongest of faith shines and inspires.
Iyon ang tignan natin, iyon ang panghawakan natin.

Marami ang nagtanong? Bakit nga ba nangyari iyon? Naghanda naman sila? Nag-evacuate naman ang napakarami? Ano ang nangyari? Saan nagkamali?
Sa mga tanong na ito. Walang tama, walang mali.
It is true that the local government units are the first responders. That is not disputed. What begs to be answered is the readiness of the national government to take over and assume control in cases of extreme and extraordinary human suffering when the local government itself becomes the victim, deemed immobile, structure crashed in a matter of minutes, a government mechanism that exists no more.

We thank CNN, BBC and other networks for pointing out what the Filipino people have questioned all along. It took a criticism from the international media for the national government to really move heaven and earth to expedite the delivery of relief and services after the killer typhoon.
In the meantime, yes, we must and we should concentrate first on the challenges of rebuilding the lives of the people of Samar and Leyte.
Lahat may magagawa, gaano man ito kaliit o kalaki.
