“I am alarmed that depression gets to become a “common cold” in this country, affecting some 3,300,000 Filipinos. It is recognized by our own Department of Health as a “serious health condition”, and the weight of “haplessness”, “hopelessness” and “helplessness” – the three dreaded “H” symptoms of depression – gravitate towards what now are the new high-risk group: the young population.”

“While not every depressed person attempts or commits suicide, most people, however, who kill themselves are dealing with depression. The AFSP concedes a strong correlation between the two: sixty percent of major depressions lead to death.”

“School life has become source of high levels of stress, as well. Our senior high school students speak of difficulty coping with increased pressure and stress with the lumping of too many difficult subjects, too many academic requirements, lack of guidance and counseling, heightened competition and increasing level of expectation from teachers and parents. Our students are lacking in formal values education or “pagpapahalaga” as this, as a stand-alone subject, is now removed from the curriculum and, instead, is integrated in the study of other subject areas.”
