AABOT sa 19 Pinoy seafarers ang kasalukuyang nakakulong sa Mexico dahil sa iligal na droga, iniulat ng Department of Foreign Affairs.
Sa kalatas, sinabi ng DFA na ikinulong ang mga crew ng barkong UBC Savannah na may watawat ng Cyprus sa Mexico noong Hulyo 27 dahil sa paglabag sa illegal drug law ng naturang bansa.
Bukod sa 19 Pinoy seaman, sakay din ng barko ang tatlong Polish.
“Embassy representatives were able to speak with seven of the Filipino seafarers currently detained for questioning,” sabi ng DFA. “The group is generally in good spirits, and informed the Embassy representatives that their families have been informed of what happened.”
Tiniyak ng DFA na patuloy ang isinagawang pagmomonitor sa lagay ng mga tripulanteng Pinoy ang Philippine Embassy sa Mexico.
“At this point, no formal charges have been filed against any seafarer. The DFA stands ready to provide any form of assistance, including legal assistance if still necessary, to protect the Filipino seafarers’ right to be heard in court,” sabi pa ng DFA.
