Ayon kay ACTS-OFW Rep. Aniceto Bertiz III 11 porsyento ng 52,280 Filipino na mayroong HIV-AIDS ay OFW batay sa datos ng Department of Health- National HIV/AIDS Registry hanggang noong Pebrero 28.
Sa kabuuang 5,537 OFW na may HIV-AIDS, 140 ang na-diagnosed sa unang dalawang buwan ng taon.
“Almost all of the OFWs in the registry acquired the infection via sexual contact,” ani Bertiz. “This is very unfortunate, because if we look at the median age of these OFWs – at 32 to 34 years old – they are actually at the top of their lives in terms of potential workforce productivity.”
Sinabi ni Bertiz na dapat ay paigtingin ng Department of Labor and Employment ang kampanya nito laban sa pagkalat ng HIV-AIDS.
“They (OFW) are exposed to foreign cultures that usually encourage high-risk behavior, including casual sex,” ani Bertiz. “And they have the money to pay for readily available commercial or transactional sex services in foreign ports.”
