Wednesday, 4th Week of Easter
1st Reading: Acts 12:24–13:5
Gospel: Jn 12:44–50
Jesus had said, and even cried out, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me, sees him who sent me. I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.
“If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I am not the one to condemn him; for I have come, not to condemn the world, but to save the world. The one who rejects me, and does not receive my word, already has a judge: the very word I have spoken will condemn him on the last day.
“For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has instructed me in what to say and how to speak…”

Today’s Gospel reading carries four concepts to guide us on our way to eternal life. They are as follows: Light as opposed to darkness, Oneness with the Father, Validation of lifestyle, and Esteem. Let us analyze how the Gospel treats each of them and how we can make use of them to get to our eternal reward.
LIGHT: In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us: “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” Some prefer to stay in the dark. Having lived so long in the dark, light now irritates them. Lesson: if we live in the darkness of sin in this lifetime, we shall be turning our backs to the light of the resurrection. Let us live under the light and we shall be saved.
ONENESS: Jesus said, “Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me.” Being with Jesus takes us to the heart of the Trinitarian relationship. I dare say without intending to be heretical, that we shall all be absorbed into the life of the Trinity, to the effect that there shall be ‘Fournity’ in the end where the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit and all the redeemed humanity shall be united in the bond of perfect love. Let us then strive to be closely united to Jesus already in this lifetime in anticipation of that perfect incorporation into the community of our Trinitarian God.
VALIDATION: Jesus said, “For I have not spoken on my own authority; the Father who sent me has instructed me in what to say and how to speak.” Likewise we are called to validate our lifestyle with the Will of God.
ESTEEM: Jesus said, “I have come, not to condemn the world, but to save the world.” God has all the right to condemn us but he chooses to accord us the highest esteem. Let us live honorably, then, consistent with this esteem accorded to us by God. – (Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., D.M.
