Faith in the shadow of death

Gen 28:10-22a
Gospel: Mt 9:18–26
While Jesus was speaking, an official of the synagogue came up to him, bowed before him and said, “My daughter has just died, but come and place your hands on her, and she will live.” Jesus stood up and followed him with his disciples.    Then a woman who had suffered from a severe bleeding for twelve years came up from behind and touched the edge of his cloak. For she thought, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned, saw her and said, “Courage, my daughter, your faith has saved you.” And from that moment the woman was cured.    When Jesus arrived at the official’s house and saw the flute players and the excited crowd, he said, “Get out of here! The girl is not dead. She is only sleeping!” And they laughed at him. But once the crowd had been turned out, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she stood up. The news of this spread through the whole area.
D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE
(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)
Saint Augustine wrote in his “Sermons”: “Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe!” This statement comes alive in the story of Jairus. He left his daughter unconscious at home to look for Jesus and bring him home to cure her. His dying hope slowly recovered as Jesus agreed to go with him. But while on their way a woman hemorrhaging for 12 years literally stole the show by stealing a miracle from Jesus. Secretly she touched the edge of Jesus’ cloak.
The cure that the woman got by merely touching Jesus’ cloak must have been a boost to Jairus’ faith. If the unauthorized touching of the hem of Jesus’ clothing healed an intruder, Jairus had reasons to believe Jesus’ visit to his house could bring his dead daughter back to life. But this faith experience was matched with the tragic situation that greeted him at the house. People were crying because his daughter was already dead. Still he kept the faith. Jesus rewarded his faith by raising his daughter back to life. That was probably the greatest miracle Jairus saw in his life.
When Jairus arrived at the house and found out that his daughter was already dead, probably he did not see how Jesus could still remedy the situation. But his faith made him believe what he couldn’t yet see. In due time he got his reward: he saw what he believed! Rightly did Saint Augustine write in his Sermons: “Faith is to believe what you do not yet see; the reward for this faith is to see what you believe!” – Rev. Fr.
