PINAG-IINGAT ng isang environmental group ang publiko sa pagbili ng mga souvenir item sa pagdating ni Pope Francis dahil ilan umano sa mga ito ang nagtataglay ng mapanganib na kemikal.

Ayon sa EcoWaste Coalition mayroon silang na-detect na lead sa pewter o pewter-like pendant ni Pope Francis at Papal Cross. “We got the shock of our life to discover souvenir items with pewter or pewter-like pendants of Pope Francis and the Papal Cross that had dangerous levels of lead. Some are of a size that could be mouthed by children as if it was a toy,” ani Thony Dizon, coordinator ng EcoWaste. Ang lead ay nakapagdudulot ng mga major health issues gaya ng learning disabilities, anemia, joint at muscle weaknesses, behavioral problems, organ failure at maging kamatayan. Ang mga sinuring pewter o pewter-like pendants ay may lebel na 17 hanggang 12 porsyento, lagpas sa limit na 0.05 porsyento. Ang mga ito ay nabili sa halagang P10 at P150 bawat isa. Kasama rito ang wrist rosary na may cross pendant, wooden bracelet na may oval-shape na Pope Francis pendant at kuwintas na may Papal Cross pendant. Nauna ng nanawagan ang EcoWaste sa gobyerno na iregulate ang bentahan ng mga alahas upang matiyak na wala itong taglay na toxic metals gaya ng lead at cadmium.
