ST. JOHN DAMASCENE
1st Reading: Is 26:1–6Gospel: Mt 7:21, 24–27

Jesus said to his disciples, “Not everyone who says to me: Lord! Lord! will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my heavenly Father.“So, then, anyone who hears these words of mine and acts accordingly is like a wise man, who built his house on rock. The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house, but it did not collapse because it was built on rock. But anyone who hears these words of mine and does not act accordingly, is like a fool who built his house on sand. The rain poured, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew and struck that house; it collapsed, and what a terrible fall that was!”

Love is like an object offered in evidence in a court of law. In legal parlance, object as evidence is one addressed to the senses of the court. Similarly, love to be genuine must be capable of being addressed to the senses of the beloved. Genuine love is one which is acted upon to the effect that its fruits are seen, felt, and in many occasions even touched and tasted by the beloved.

Love verbalized is good enough. Consider the joy of the wife to whom the husband said one day: “Dear, you are my Mahogany while I am your Narra”. The husband explained to his perplexed wife in Cebuano: “Mahog gani ka, narra jud ko para nimo.”

(When you fall I will be there for you). But while it is true that love put into words is music to the ears, if it stops there it becomes noise. Try repeating with your lips the word love at least three times and you hear yourself saying blah, blah, blah! Your mind wants to say love, love, love, but your ears hear you saying blah, blah, blah. Love verbalized must ripen into action.

Is action the best thing that can happen to love? Not yet! There is so much action in tennis and pingpong games, for example, but no player would want to hear the word “love” from the scorer. That is because in tennis and pingpong love refers to a score of zero.

Love not acted upon is also zero because nothing goes to the beloved as all go to the self. The action to which love is translated must pertain to the good of the beloved. At his highest, love that has ripened into action comes alive to become the person. The best model is Jesus – the Word made Flesh. When Jesus was born, the Word was set into action. There was nothing for God in there. Everything was for humanity. God didn’t just practice love but became love itself.  -Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM.
