“GONE Girl” is a very good and intriguing mystery thriller with so many twists.20th Century Philippines invited us early this week for an advanced screening of the movie but we begged out.
Ang real reason namin, tamad kaming manood ng movie from a book na hindi namin nabasa. Call that kayabangan but we’d like to be in the know if we’re watching a movie that came from a book.
Last Friday, in between appointments sa Makati, tumama ang first viewing time ng “Gone Girl” sa Cinema 2 ng Greenbelt at 2:30 p.m. so we bought our ticket.
Former writer and now bar owner Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) lost his wife Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) the day of their fifth wedding anniversary. Initially, everybody believed him and was not a suspect of anything.
Then, napagbintangan na siya that she killed her wife and believe us, kung ayaw ninyo ng spoiler alert, hanggang dito lang ang puwede naming ikuwento even though this is just the first 30 minutes of the movie.
“Gone Girl” is the type of story that will make us buy the book if not the other way around. Author Gillian Flynn who also did the screenplay is a very good thriller writer we really admire her for the twists she has injected throughout the story.
Now, normally pinipitik namin ang mga movies na napakaraming would-be endings but in this one, kapag feeling mo magi-ending na, nagkakaroon ng panibagong twist so you just have to move on.
Let’s just say hanggang sa huli, you don’t know kung sino ang bida at kung sino ang kontrabida, it’s the good. Hindi rin kami mapagpuri ng director but this is another exemption we’re doing for the movie dahil kitang-kita kay director David Fincher that he really knows his story at kayang-kaya tayong paikutin while waiting for the movie to end.
Then there’s the acting which really helped the good story and adept direction. We were never a fan of Ben, hindi siya outstanding but he’s not bad either. In this film, he was very consistent as the wronged husband.
At the height of his public persecution, maniniwala at maniniwala ka sa kanya that he is not guilty of any crime except for infidelity. That is hard to pull off dahil again you have to know your character in and out to be able to do this.
Must have been his training as a director of very good and Oscar worthy nominated movies that the Oscar award winner for Screenplay (Good Will Hunting) and producer of Best Picture (Argo) gave him some acting tips na rin from the actors he has handled.
Now, it was actually the three girls around his life that are outstanding. Rosamund as the wily wife is outstanding. We haven’t seen any of her past projects except the “Wrath of the Titans” where she just played a beautiful bride and nothing else but we’re really blown away by her acting skills.
Too early for Oscar buzz but she could get a nomination as breakthrough role niya ito and went had a field day in the acting department.
Carrie Coon as Margo Dunne, Nick’s twin sister, is just as good. Simple lang ang acting niya but her being turn in between not believing his brother’s half-stories and still loving him unconditionally is exceptional. Wala siyang big scene so to speak but her presence is felt every time she is in the screen.
Then there’s Kim Dickens as Detective Rhonda Boney, ang unang humahawak sa kaso ng pagkawala ng asawa ni Nick. Again, napakadaling gawing caricature ang isang female detective but she played it properly, walang dagdag at walang bawas ikanga and she came out just right.
Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry are both okay too but we feel they’re too big for their parts. Halos second part of the movie na lang lumabas ang mga characters nila bilang sina Desi Collings and Tanner Bolt. Si Desi ang sinasabing high school sweetheart ni Amy na stalker samantalang si Tanner naman ang high profile attorney that will handle Nick’s case.
Both actors are award winners, so it really goes without saying there are no small roles, only small actors. For such big stars na sa gitna na ng movie lalabas is a testimony of their confidence.
Second week pa lang ito and since it was also number one last weekend sa USA, we feel magtatagal pa ang showing ng “Gone Girl” kaya huwag niyo na itong palampasin before it’s gone on the big screen.
Konti na lang ang “edge of your seat” stories and “Gone Girl” is one. At sa mga beki diyan na umaasa sa frontal scene sa banyo shower ni Ben, do not expect. R-16 lang ito. Wait n’yo na lang ang DVD.
