19th Week in Ordinary Time 1st Reading: Ez 2: 8 – 3:4 Gospel:
Matthew 18:1-5, 10, 12-14

The disciples came to Jesus and asked him, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

Then Jesus called a little child, set the child in the midst of the disciples, and said, “I assure you that unless you change and become like little children, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes lowly like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, and whoever receives such a child in my name receives me.

“See that you do not despise any of these little ones, for I tell you: their angels in heaven continually see the face of my heavenly Father.

“What do you think of this? If someone has a hundred sheep and one of them strays, won’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillside, and go to look for the stray one? And I tell you: when he finally finds it, he is more pleased about it than about the ninety-nine that did not get lost. It is the same with your Father in heaven: there they don’t want even one of these little ones to be lost.”

(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)

A teacher asks her pupils if they are interested to go to heaven. Everyone raise their hands except Pedro. “Aren’t you interested to go to heaven?” the teacher asks. Pedro replies: “I’d love to but my Mama told me to come home early today”. Pedro’s answer provokes us into revisiting the role of parents in the salvation of their children. Parents can sometimes hinder the salvation of their sons and daughters. Examples abound. In recent years authorities have discovered that parents from Cordova, Cebu have engaged their own children in online pornography.  The family dog was not spared because according to reports dogs were also used in their online sex trade.

More parents are causing their children’s spiritual and moral decadence.  How sad that the devil has penetrated the inner sanctum of the family. The family is supposed to be our safest haven. But the family is evolving into one of the most dangerous places for children. The danger has climbed up to the womb of the mother because some mothers have learned to treat their womb as personal property. They believe they have absolute right over their womb. They insist on their right to enjoy what the flesh offers without having to worry about pregnancy.

Times change and sometimes it is simply hard to resist the tide. Yet Jesus’ warning remains unchanged its truth undiminished: “See that you do not despise any of these little ones, for I tell you: their angels in heaven continually see the face of my heavenly Father”.- Rev.
