Bunkhouse para sa Yolanda victims ‘bulok’

MASIKIP, manipis ang dingding na gawa sa plywood, at may bubong na madaling mabaklas ng malakas ng ulan. Ganito kung ilarawan ng arkitekto at urban planner na si Felino Palafox Jr. kahapon ang mga bunkhouse na itinayo para sa mga biktima ng super-typhoon Yolanda sa Tacloban City.

“I’m reminded of the saying, `We build monuments for the dead but we can’t even provide decent housing for the living’,” aniya.
Idinagdag ni Palafox, na bumisita sa siyudad noong Disyembre 13, na ang mga pagtatayo ng mga bunkhouse ay lumabag sa building at fire codes.

“Would you want your family to live here?” aniya. “It’s a fire hazard. There’s no privacy. The materials are so flimsy.”
Pinuna rin niya ang bubong ng mga bunkhouses.

“Why repeat the same mistake? We’re supposed to build back better,” dagdag niya. Kamakailan ay iniulat ng isang international shelter group na “substandard” ang mga bahay na itinatayo ng Department of Public Works and Highways.

Nangangamba ang  Camp Coordination and Camp Management sa seguridad ng mga taong titira sa nasabing bahay dahil masikip, walang bentilasyon at madaling masunog umano ang mga ito.
