17th Week in Ordinary Time 1st Reading: Ex 34:29-35 Gospel:
Matthew 13:44-46

Jesus sent the crowds away and went into the house. And his disciples came to him saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” He answered them, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed are the people of the Kingdom; the weeds are those who follow the evil one. The enemy who sows them is the devil; the harvest is the end of time and the workers are the angels.

Just as the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom all that is scandalous and all who do evil. And these will be thrown in the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the just will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. If you have ears, then hear.”

D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE (Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)

An anecdote is told of a husband who reported to his wife that their only boy stole money from his wallet. The wife retorted: “For all you know I could be the culprit.” But the husband insisted the child really did it. “What makes you so sure?” the wife inquired. The husband replied: “Because the thief did not empty my wallet.”

All the while the husband knew the wife had been pilfering from his wallet. Yet he waited for one hilarious moment to confront her in a non-offensive manner. How many people there still are of his kind? Many are merely coexisting like weeds and wheat to one another. But weren’t these couples blessed by the Lord at the altar of marriage? What business does evil have in relationships blessed by God?

Our experience with evil is too loud to ignore. To appease our minds we have invented the principle called “gaba” (karma) where we expect God to raise his heavy hand of justice against perpetrators of evil. Then we are disappointed to find out that “gaba” is inconsistent with God’s nature. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good! Amen? Evil exists in the world, and God is not in a hurry to call justice upon its perpetrators.

This notwithstanding, God is in control. He still writes well using crooked lines. God’s grace can turn coexistence with evil people into fertile moments of growth in faith. If we respond well, we do not only grow stronger in faith but also convert evil people to God’s side. Were you the wife of such a respectful husband in the anecdote above, would you continue pilfering from his wallet? By his love you’d be converted! – Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., DM.
