Lenten Weekday
1st Reading: Jer 7:23–28
Gospel: Lk 11:14–23
(…) Yet some of them said, “He drives out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the chief of the demons.” (…) But Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every nation divided by civil war is on the road to ruin, and will fall. If Satan also is divided, his empire is coming to an end. How can you say that I drive out demons by calling upon Beelzebul? If I drive them out by Beelzebul, by whom do your fellow members drive out demons? They will be your judges then.“But suppose I drive out demons by the finger of God; would not this mean that the kingdom of God has come upon you? As long as the strong and armed man guards his house, his goods are safe. But when a stronger one attacks and overcomes him, the challenger takes away all the weapons he relied on and disposes of his spoils. “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me, scatters.”

On the topic of unity Roy B. Zuck (The Speaker’s Quote Book, 1999) wrote, “You may tie the tails of a cat and a dog together by a rope and have union, but you surely don’t have unity!” We agree. Unity is more than physical union; it requires meeting of minds, hearts, and souls. The more unity approaches perfection the more shades of division it sheds off. And when the bond that unites is Christian love, unity perfected brings God to our midst.
Christian Love is not necessary in one’s quest for unity. Devils need to put their acts together too to prevail over humans. “If Satan also is divided,” Jesus said, “his empire is coming to an end” (Luke 11:14-23). So far, Satan and his minions are united until today even without practicing Christian love. So let us be careful with the kind of unity we are advocating. Unless it is founded on Christian love, the unity we advocate may just be hanging upon the rope that can strangle us. “Whoever is not with me is against me,” Jesus said, “and whoever does not gather with me, scatters.”
Our country needs the kind of unity founded on God, and it can be ours if we conduct the coming elections properly. By proper conduct of elections we refer to the moral and spiritual preparation of voters. How timely that the Holy Week precedes the elections this year. If only all Filipinos repent and seek enlightenment from God, the majority that will catapult a new administration for the country will not be the tyrant numbers comprising unprincipled, politically bridled, and morally corrupt voters but people united in the Lord. – (Atty.)
