5th Week in Ordinary Time
1st Reading: Gen 3:1-8
Gospel: Mark 7:31-37
Again Jesus set out; from the country of Tyre, passed through Sidon and, skirting the Sea of Galilee, he came to the territory of Decapolis. There a deaf man who also had difficulty in speaking was brought to him. They asked Jesus to lay his hand upon him.
Jesus took him apart from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then, looking up to heaven, he groaned and said to him, “Ephphetha,” that is, “Be opened.”
And his ears were opened, his tongue was loosened, and he began to speak clearly. Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone, but the more he insisted on this, the more they proclaimed it. The people were completely astonished and said, “He has done all things well; he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.”

Here’s a joke to lighten your day. CUSTOMER: Pabili ng Hope. MR. TABURNOK: H’wag kang sumigaw, di ako bingi! CUSTOMER: Sorry. MR. TABURNOK: Anong klaseng Coke, litro o solo? CUSTOMER: Hope, hindi Coke! Dagdagan nyo na rin ng Safeguard. MR. TABURNOK: Anong klaseng simcard, globe o smart? CUSTOMER: safeguard, hindi simcard, bingi!!! MR. TABURNOK: Hindi ako bingi… bulol lang ang pagka sabi mo. CUSTOMER: Galing lumusot! MR. TABURNOK: Hindi ako si Garing Sumusot!
It’s bad to be deaf, it could be worse to be mute at the same time. Jesus was moved with pity when he encountered one in today’s Gospel reading. That groan he released from the depths of his being while touching the ear and tongue of the deaf-mute was expressive of the depth of God’s compassion for the suffering among us. It was then that the deaf-mute recovered his power of speech and hearing.
Today, there is a worse form of deafness that Jesus must heal: deafness to morality. Why can’t perpetrators of the so-called extra-judicial killings hear the cry of family dependents that are getting orphaned because drug suspects are summarily killed without the benefit of any legal process?
Why can’t some businessmen hear the cry of the children of their workers who are advised to sleep early so not to feel the pangs of hunger? Why can’t some judges hear the cry of the innocent who languish in jail just because of technicality? Why can’t some jail executives hear the cry of prisoners who are fed with only 25% of the allotted budget because 75% of it is pocketed?
