The yeast if hypocrisy

28th Week in Ordinary Time1st Reading: Eph 1:11–14Gospel: Lk 12:1–7

Such a numerous crowd had gathered that they crushed one another. Then Jesus spoke to his disciples in this way: “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be made known. Whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in daylight, and what you have whispered in hidden places, will be proclaimed from the housetops.“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who put to death the body and after that can do no more. But I will tell you whom to fear: Fear the One who after killing you is able to throw you into hell…”

Jesus, who also called himself the Way, the Truth, and the Life, couldn’t stand hypocrisy, and didn’t want any hypocrite to follow him. Already sensing that the Pharisees were hypocrites, he told everyone to be careful. He said, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. “

Hypocrisy always involves dualism in personality. The good side is ostentatiously displayed while the bad side is surreptitiously concealed. How long can the bad side be kept hidden depends on the degree of perversity. But Jesus warned everyone that the concealment would not last long. He said, “Whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in daylight.”

Because hypocrisy dreams big, it shares the aspirations of those who aim for loftier things. By the way, there is nothing wrong with aiming for higher things. We are in fact told by Jesus to be perfect just as our heavenly Father is perfect. The problem is that while the sincere ones work hard and go for the aces, the hypocrite pretends and put up appearances. Instead of exerting so much energy on hard work to make his dreams come true, the hypocrite wastes precious energy trying to make appearances to impress everyone. If only he can channel this energy to serve others, the glory will come as a matter of course.

Sadly, the hypocrite’s preoccupation is to hide behind the façade of make-believe in order to deceive.

There is nothing more painful to a Creator than to see the human beings he created cheated by their own kind. Showing deep concern for the innocent Jesus exclaimed, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy.” Yeasts penetrate the dough and dictate the appearance of bread. The yeast of the Pharisees penetrates our being and dictates how we should appear before the public. While it succeeds in the makeover most of the time, it worsens our standing before the Lord. – (Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., D.M.
