22nd Week in Ordinary Time
1st Reading: 1 Col 3:1-9
Gospel: Luke 4:38-44

Leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to the house of Simon. His mother-in-law was suffering from high fever and they asked him to do something for her. Bending over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her.
Immediately she got up and waited on them.

At sunset, people suffering from many kinds of sickness were brought to Jesus. Laying his hands on each one, he healed them. Demons were driven out, howling as they departed from their victims, “You are the Son of God!” He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, for they knew he was the Messiah.

Jesus left at daybreak and looked for a solitary place. People went out in search of him and, finding him, they tried to dissuade him from leaving. But he said, “I have to go to other towns to announce the good news of the kingdom of God. That is what I was sent to do.” So Jesus continued to preach in the synagogues of the Jewish country.

D@iGITAL-EXPERIENCE
(Daily Gospel in the Assimilated Life Experience)

At a certain healing session the healer -preacher asked the participants to stand up one group at a time starting with those having ailments at the head, then down to the feet. At this, those having ailments at the head such as migraine, brain tumor, cataract and goiter stood up. Next to stand up were those with ailments at the torso area, such breast cancer, stomach diseases, and heart problems. Finally the preacher called for the last group. “Those feeling something on their limbs and feet please stand up.” Then someone from the assembly interrupted as he cried out: “Lumampas po yata kayo” (You’re skipping an area!). “Why, what is your sickness?” The healer-preacher inquired. The man sheepishly shouted back, “I have almoranas!”.

This funny anecdote takes us to the more serious truth about God’s desire to keep us healthy, not only spiritually but also physically. Not even the most negligible ailment escapes God’s attention. Today’s Gospel reading, in fact, tells us that Jesus healed all forms of sickness. But we must bear in mind that while God wants us to be healthy, we must do our fair share of self-care. By indulging in dangerous carnal experimentations and other vices we drive God away. The funny thing is that after driving Him away and wallowing in all vices in every way, people demand miraculous healing from God at too late a time when their health is already deteriorating. Do they deserve any miracle at all? No they don’t; nobody does. But the good news is: God can make all things new. It’s never too late with a God who patiently waits. – (Atty.) Rev. Fr.
