Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ
1st Reading: Exodus 24:3-82nd Reading: Hebrews 9:11-15 Gospel: Mark 14:12-16, 22-26

So Jesus sent two of his disciples with these instructions, “Go into the city and there a man will come to you carrying a jar of water. Follow him to the house he enters and say to the owner, ‘The Master says: Where is the room where I may eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ Then he will show you a large room upstairs, already arranged and furnished. There you will prepare for us.” The disciples went off. When they reached the city, they found everything just as Jesus had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. And he said, “Take this, it is my body.” Then he took a cup and after he had given thanks, passed it to them and they all drank from it. And he said, “This is my blood, the blood of the Covenant, which is to be poured out for many.

The institution of the Eucharist was a logical consequence of Jesus’ promise to be with us until the end of time. Let us revisit the Catechism of the Catholic Church to revitalize our love for the Eucharist. The points are arranged to form the acronym “MASS” for better recall.

The Eucharist is the “MEMORIAL OF CHRIST’S PASSOVER”, the making present and the sacramental offering of his unique sacrifice in the liturgy of the Church which is his Body. In all the Eucharistic Prayers we find after the words of institution a prayer called the anamnesis or memorial.” (No. 1362, CCC).

The Eucharist is also the “ABIDING PRESENCE OF CHRIST”. Christ (…) is present in his Word, in his Church’s prayer, in the poor, the sick and the imprisoned, in the sacraments of which he is the author, in the sacrifice of the Mass and in the person of the minister. But he is present most especially in the Eucharistic species (No. 1373, CCC).

The Eucharist is a “SACRIFICE OF LOVE”. The sacrificial character of the Eucharist is manifested in the very words of institution: “this is my body which is given for you” … In the Eucharist Christ gives us the very body which he gave up for us on the cross, the very blood which he poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (No. 1365, CCC).

Above all, the Eucharist is the “SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF CHRISTIAN LIFE”. The other sacraments and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the Blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church namely Christ himself, our Pasch. (No. 1324, CCC). –(Atty.) Rev. Fr. Dan Domingo P. delos Angeles, Jr., D.M.
